Ask a female member of your family if they have any pads/tampons, first. You need something to hold the flow if you get what I mean, and tissue paper just won't cut it! :P
I find that if you've only just started pads are good as even though they might be a bit uncomfortable at first, they're easier to use. And if you feel too awkward to ask anyone for some, you could just go out and buy some yourself.
If you get cramps, you can always take a painkiller or use a hot water bottle - I find the latter works best for me. You never know though, some people just don't get cramps. Your period will probably last between 4 and 6 days, but although it's supposed to be monthly, it may be a bit off schedule for the first few months as your body gets used to it. So don't worry if the next one comes early or a little late! (Some girls miss out entire months)
I hoped this helped in some way... anyway, welcome to womanhood!

You might want to use pads instead of tampons your first few periods because your flow might not be heavy enough for a tampon at first. if you do use them, make sure you put them in right because they can hurt if they aren't in deep enough. good luck!

Chamomile tea! ^^ You can find it by the coffee and other tea at just about every store and it works wonders for cramps, as well as being great before going to bed since it helps to calm people down.
I've heard that chocolate( oh hallelujah) helps with pms( pre-menstrual syndrome, of which emotions get a bit crazy) and if you`re feeling a bit cranky( we all do) it helps.
Lastly, I'd bring a pack or 2 of moist wipes cloth things( best way I can describe them) in a pocket or something, so if it comes suddenly, you'll be prepared( a brand called Summer`s eve is the kind I use, which can also be located in feminine hygiene section of a store)

You'll get used to that. try a few different types of pad to see is most comfy. And always carry extras with you. Welcome to the P club!
