So, I should probably know this, seeing as I've been using them for years, but how are you supposed to get rid of tampons? Flushing or garbage? I always flushed them. I mean, the first time I used one I read the entire box and it said nothing about not flushing tampons. And I'm pretty sure in school they taught us pads are big no-no, but tampons are ok. BUT, I just read an article about how you should never flush them because they can cause clogs. Sooo... Yeah, what are you supposed to do? I keep finding a bunch of contradicting answers on google.

O_o I dunno why people would think pads are bad, you just can switch from pad to tampon if you are going swimming or going to exercise. The best pad I have ever tried( because I treat myself like royalty, therefore I must have the best xD) is Always( the infinity kind is OK, but rather easy to leak) and the best tampons are Kotex( because Tampax pearl hurts me, personally, but you can try those too) and what people say about flushing, eh, it usually says of its ok or not, because most of the time card board is the kind you can flush. For the most part I'd just say wrap them up in toilet paper and put them in that metal thing with the lid you should be able to find in public restrooms.

When I said pads are bad, I meant as far as flushing. I'm not a huge fan of kotex, although, I do like that they're small enough I can stick one in my pocket if I don't want to take my purse in the restaurant or store or whatever.
And I should clarify that I'm asking about the actual tampon, I know you can't flush most applicators.

I've never seen anything that says you can't flush the actual tampon, and most of my friends that use tampons flush it. I mean, it's not exactly that large and if you've been flushing it and up until now, you haven't had any clogging it should be okay to flush it.

I don't use tampons.
I have heard that you should NEVER flush any sanitary products. I have even seen this on signs in public restrooms and heard it numerous times. They can clog the system and it is like throwing garbage into the water systems.
You should probably do as with pads and wrap them in a piece of toilet paper/wrapper/etc. and toss them into the garbage.

I was told a long time ago that it was ok to flush tampons. My mother was the first to tell me and all of my friends do it. They're not that big and I'm sure there are worse things that get flushed. Pads are different. Even the thin ones and liners shouldn't be flushed.

Ok, well that goes for the tampons themselves as well. They may be small, but eventually I can clog up a septic tank, which is not a pretty sight 8/ Oh, and I just remembered, there are things called menstrual cups that can be used up to 12 hours, you wash them, and then re-use them( hopefully by then you would be in a private restroom). They may look like they would be uncomfortable, but they are actually very highly reviewed.

Please throw them away in the garbage, i stayed in an apartment in London for a month while doing a photo shoot, and the drains got blocked twice by tampons and pads

I've never had a problem flushing tampons, but I guess it depends on how old your plumbing is and if you have a septic tank or not.
I also heard basements are bad to flush things because flushes have to travel against gravity to reach street level, so its easier to clog because they use smaller pipes to increase the water pressure up. I've never lived in a house with a basement so I don't really know

Well think about it. How many girls are under your room all the time? Mom? Sisters? Etc.? And how many girls CAN be under your roof at the same point? For example, if you had a party with friends and family, there could easily be maybe 10 girls? More? Now imagine 10+ tampons being flushed into your system in a short span of time.
I would say, just play it safe

I'm the only girl ever in my house, except my mom who finished menopause years ago. And I only use 4 or 5 tampons per period since it's too light most of the time.

I just wrap it up in toilet paper or wrapper and throw in the receptacle in the bathroom or the trash.
Wow -- we'll never get the real answer because [as stated] there's no consistent accurate answer.

I thought the maximum you can wear a tampon is 8 hours to prevent Toxic Shock Syndome.

The few times I've used tampons, I've always used the same brand and read the box thoroughly from top to bottom; it said they were okay to flush, so I've always flushed them. I think it depends largely on the brand and the make.

we live in the country and have a septic tank, not like the sewer system in the city so mom told me that if it won't dissolve it doesn't go in the toilet so iwrap it and put it in the trashcan but at school, I flush it.

Yeah, I meant most of the time it's too light to use a tampon, so I only use them on the one heavy day of my period.

I've always flushed mine, it's what my stem mom told me to do when I started using them.
