Ok, so recently my friend (let's call him Bob) has been acting a bit odd. This began when I overheard Bob talking about the priest of his sister's church who made an unwelcome sexual advance toward his sister. Bob was furious and I overheard Bob mention that he wanted to set fire to the church or the priest, I don't remember which. At first I thought that he wasn't being serious and it was just something he said in the moment, but earlier today I saw Bob buying a propane tank. I'm not going to go to the cops about it, I want to talk with him first. I'm just not at all sure how to broach this topic with him. Any ideas?

The direct approach is best, and you should tell "Bob" exactly what you are telling us. Clearly, if Bob is going to do this, then you have to stop him because what happens if he follows through on his plan and kills someone else? More than anything, you should calm Bob down and let him know that no matter what the priest did it is not worth going to prison on his end. Report the priest and let the legal system deal with the priest who is in the wrong. There is no sense in Bob going to jail for arson or worse.

If Bob will not listen to reason, then talk to his family so that you don't loose you friend to the prison system.

For some reason, I guessed that before I even scrolled down.

Well let me start by saying I work for the Orlando Fire Department as a Arson/Bomb unit and also volunteer in the juvinile firesetters program. Sounds like there is more than pyro involved. Pyro's have a facisination with fire, not harming people. Fire can have sexual turnons as well. On top of the schizophrina can exhibit its self with a fascination to fire. You may want to be careful how you approach the subject. Any direct crizitizm and it will be perceieved as a direct attack and he/she may conside you a threat and could cause them to do the create opposite. Be careful. You can tip the local fire department that someone may be looking to set fire to the church. Note that even if you give a tip you are NOT requrired to give the persons name.
