View Full Version : Bump Policy

If you ask me, the bump policy is taken as black and white across the forums. I understand in areas such as P101 and H&A as a whole that it should be more strict, but in General Discussions it is not as simple as a 2 month limit if you ask me. Several threads get made over the same topic that aren't just related to one person's side (like H&A is).
Let's look at TV/Cinema. I know that there are a huge amount of The Walking Dead threads, I mean look at this (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/search.php?searchid=4187881). It's ridiculous. I mean, merge the threads if they're over the same topic, regardless of OP post date.
The topic is obviously still relevant and is not dead. Sure the thread died, but that could be up to several reasons. With TV shows, there's downtime between seasons, so it's obvious the thread is gonna die in that downtime, or become scarcely active.
If you ask me the lock rule has become very strict on the site. When I was on staff, GD was basically a "as see fit" way of doing it. I know that staff has changed, and no one on staff was even around when I was a moderator (except for Mike and Val, I think), but that doesn't mean this way didn't work and save a lot of repeat threads.

Sounds quite reasonable, actually. I support this idea too, and I see what you mean. It'll have to be something reasonable though, like bumping a topic on a TV show that no longer exists is just stupid.

I mean, the idea spreads beyond TV too. In Tech Junkies there were multiple Minecraft threads being locked because they reached that magic 2 month limit and new ones created because of this. But I do like to see that I'm not alone in this thought process. If anything, it makes moderators jobs easier to simply tell if the topic is still relevant rather than going through to lock it.

This is actually being discussed right now. I'm in support of this idea too. I think it'll really be good for the forums in general and it will clean things up quite a bit.
ps; I don't think we ever modded together :P

I agree.
Just using the Film + TV threads as an example, it's a bit ridiculous to have to create a new thread each time a new season starts. It's especially pointless if there were a great discussion that had gone on in the previous thread.

I was saying I think you guys were the only current staff who were active members during my time on staff.

Not quite sure when this rule become so strict, but I agree Connor. It has always been a rule that should be taken a lot less seriously in some situations. I support it.

I definitely agree as well.

The only problem with this I see is differing in moderator's discretion. What some mods may see fit, others don't. This creates a grey area in the rules and can be slightly confusing when moderating a section. So I'm not quite sure if that actually makes the job any easier.

Why not just add something to the sticky at the top of the forum?
Obviously, as already pointed out, it should be ok to be more lenient in some areas.
I slightly disagree with Rayquaza. There are people that watch TV shows that no longer create new episodes. Just because an individual doesn't see a need for a certain thread doesn't necessarily mean others don't as well. Now...if it's the same person bumping it, then they should get the memo. If it's two or three people watching an old TV show from the 80s or whatever, that's fine.
