Should marijuana be legalized? What are your thoughts? I think it should be legalized; I would like to read opposing arguments to the idea, I and I hope others will rebut them to the best of our abilities.

I say don't legalize it. Its just another thing on top of cigarettes and alcohol that people do to feel good/be cool and become addicted. There really is no point behind any of these things and spending money at the risk potentially harmful side effects

I'm high right now, so obviously it being illegal doesn't stop me, even though I am by all other accounts a law abiding citizen.
Just tax me instead.

I'd like to point out the only flaw in your argument, saying you can get addicted to pot.
You can't. There are no addictive properties to it. None, what so ever.
How ever, people's minds can get addicted to the feeling. But, does not mean pot is addictive.

I do agree that it should be taxed like cigarettes and alcohol. I also feel the states should have say in the matter of legalization.

The substance is harmful to the user; then it is a risk wishes to take.

I never once said that pot itself is addctive. While the plant itself may not be addictive it is entirely possible to become addicted to the feeling, or high, that is inflicted by the use of the drug. People may become dependent on the high from the drug to feel good and be happy.

That made me laugh and dont no why but I agree legalize it the hard part is the only reason why it's illegal is because you don't pay taxes
No deaths from weed yet thousands from alcohol just because they tax beer it's so stupid

Well cigarettes are chemically addictive, so the user doesn't usually control the addiction. However, marijuana can be addictive, but it's usually the user's choice. What I mean by that is, if they feel good doing it, then they're going to do it, but could stop any time(maybe not if they have an addictive personality). For cigarettes the person may not like it, but can't stop smoking even if they don't have an addictive personality.

I think it should be legalized and taxed because it is not chemically addictive, it's not as harmful as cigarettes and alcohol by a ton (even has healing properties), and there are no recorded deaths(more people die from peanuts than marijuana each year, considering there aren't any deaths due to marijuana).

It should be legalised, yeah. It's way less harmful than cigarettes and alcohol, plus it being sold legally would render black market weed distribution useless.

Legalize and tax it. Saves money on enforcement, the government doesn't need to spend money keeping smokers in prison, and they get money from the taxation.

if things like alcohol and tobacco are legal, its not like theyre so against harmful substances

I agree on the point you made about how it is addictive, however if it were legalized I see no problem with getting addicted. I feel this way because it is addictive because you enjoy it, not chemically, but mentally. So if the person who is addicted for some reason stopped enjoying the high, they could very easily quit.
So I say legalize it and tax it.

I think it should be legal because of the resources the government wastes tracking down those involved with marijuana and its production. What a waste of law enforcement!

One of the reasons it's illegal is barefaced racism. When they came to the New World, Europeans witnesses Amerindians using psilocybin, peyotl, salvia, weed etc to attain higher states of consciousness to conduct their rituals. To assimilate them and destroy their culture, they made the substances illegal (except salvia for some odd reason).
Weed hurts no one. The only thing you have to watch out for is if you're predisposed to schizophrenia because smoking cannabis can "unleash the beast", so to speak. I don't see why I should be considered a criminal when all I do is toke up in the comfort of my home. Hell, 2 days ago I got so baked that I was having insane closed eye visuals and decided to have Pokemon battles in my head. Do you seriously think I wanna do anything that could cause harm to myself or somebody else when I've got that crazy stuff going on? Fuck no. I want to sit and close my eyes and enjoy the ride, or alternatively watch dumb TV shows and laugh my head off. Reefer madness doesn't exist.
The government can usually afford to be paternalistic and keep people from doing dumb shit but this is one instance where it can't. First, because smoking weed is not dumb, nor is it morally reprehensible. For something to enter the scope of criminal law, it has to be morally reprehensible enough that people caught deserve to be called criminals and to carry the stigmata that comes with being one. It's painfully obvious that possession of weed of all things should not bring a person society's wrath. Besides, the war on drugs is a complete failure and costs tons of money. How about taking all of that money to fund programs to give addicts some help instead?
Marijuana gave me back a thousandfold whatever it may have taken from me. I can never sleep after BJJ unless I smoke because my adrenaline rushes are abnormally heavy and keep me awake all night. It's an amazing sleep aid without all the horrid side effects of valium and other pharmaceuticals.
Maybe I'm putting on my tinfoil hat right now but I bet at least one reason it is still illegal is because of big pharma and their endless pockets and lobbyists. Weed is super cheap to produce and sell (an ounce of amazing pot goes for 200$ in Canada) and prices are sure to drop down once it's widely available, even if it's taxed. Meanwhile, pharmaceuticals cost an arm and a leg and have tons of nasty side effects. Imagine if doctors could just prescribe weed to people suffering from insomnia and better yet, depression? That's two huge, billion-dollar worth markets right there...and if marijuana becomes a government monopoly, all of that goes directly to the government who can then redistribute it using social services.
Seriously, nothing wrong with weed or shrooms, and to a lesser degree LSD. However, when it comes to legalizing drugs, I wouldn't go farther than these three and some others like salvia.

Practically anything can become addictive, at least in a psychological sense. No, neither weed nor video games are physically addictive. I was half-joking. :)

why should tobacco and alcohol be legal if weed isn't, when it is a lot safer?
marijuana not being legalized causes lots of problems, such as drug cartels. (a main portion of trade is marijuana i'd guess)

I think that its should be legalized and taxed. But you should not be allowed to use it in a public place where lots of people gather.
I am not a big supporter of it due to the fact it set off my Uncle's schizophrenia when he used to do it, and I don't want to risk it happening to me with my Family's history.
I'd rather have pot legal than tobacco. At least it's healthier for you.

I'm against smoking it myself, and I don't like it when my friends do it either. It hinders brain development before you're an adult you know.
but it should be legalized. the way it is now, its a big waste of money putting people in jail for a crime where no one gets hurt, mostly black poor people. and the illegal drug trade is the cause of all sorts of problems in mexico too. the laws against pot actually ruin peoples' lives instead of making them better

Personally, I would never smoke weed, but I think it should be legalized, for several reasons
Firstly, the government could tax it and actually make money from it rather than spending time and money arresting people who smoke it. Also, I dont really care if someone else smokes weed, its not my problem and if they want to do it, go ahead and let them
Weed is also a huge money-maker for drug cartels, so legalizing it will make people stop buying from the cartels and start buying from legal, taxed stores.

ITT: people who have never smoked weed fighting for it to be illegal
I'm not gonna lie and say I haven't smoked at all, but I was always pro-legalization. Why? It's silly to make something like pot illegal. The risk of hurting yourself while high from marijuana are much lower than the chances of when you're drunk. The physical side-effects of smoking are much less than smoking or drinking. Any chance you might cause harm to others is also lower than that of an intoxicated person. If you ask me, cigarettes and alcohol are much more harmful that marijuana, however are socially acceptable to consume.
