Why can't I have an SATA and an IDE hard drive plugged into my motherboard at the same time... If I have an IDE in there, it wont recognize the SATA drive, and if I have an SATA drive, it won't recognize the IDE...

It doesn't actually recognize it, or it just won't boot with both of them in there? And, it doesn't recognize both of them?
If not, What Motherboard is it, and does it do the same thing with a different IDE or SATA drive?

It's probably your motherboard. I don't see what else it could be. It does recognize them individually right?

It isn't by chance a Promise (Brand) SATA Controller, is it? Although I can't find an official documentation of this, This, or something Similar is a Known issue with those SATA Controllers. Someone I used to know had a Similar Problem (I think) and I've seen a few similar cases around the internet.

... Good point. I used to have one. I hated the thing, but it didn't make my IDE unrecognizable.

It doesn't boot from it nor does BIOS recognize it. It can only recognize the first one I put in. My motherboard is Intel D925XECV2.
Hard drive is a Western Digital Caviar SE16 320 GB SATA.

What if you try Updating your Bios?

Maybe Try the SATA drive on a Different SATA Port on the Motherboard, and the IDE drive on the Secondary Controller, as opposed to the Primary one?

There's only one IDE controller, and I've tried every SATA port. I've also updated to the latest BIOS as well.

Just curious why you need the two bus's anyways?

Probally because he wants both of his HDDs plugged in? My setup is the same, 2x SATA drives and 2x IDE drives. It's cheaper to use olds HDDs than buying a big new one.

+ my SATA wasn't compatible with Vista for some reason, but I'd still like to use it for another OS.
