View Full Version : Should America try to regulate how much children a couple can have?

I know it sounds horrible and all, but I do believe it would help in different areas. It may also encourage people to adopt more of the kids that are already born.

How many* children, not how much.
No. That will almost make us like China (even though some things will be different of course, don't think there's a huge preference of boys here like in China). Government shouldn't intervene in personal lives like this.
Will there be any punishments for couples who have more than what's allowed?
I don't know, just don't think it's a good idea. China did it for population control...but it didn't work out too well. Also, if America tries to do this, it'll kinda be like that book series where it's basically illegal to have a third child (and there are "Population Police" and all that. I know it's just fiction, but you know...who knows what will happen)

It is very true that we simply cannot continue expanding at this rate. I seem to remember them saying that if we spread out all the world's resources evenly we would be able to support about 8-9 billion people, and we all know that the resources are not spread out evenly. I think that the government should encourage people to have less children, we're trying to get it in Britain where you lose your child benefit allowance after the 3rd child to stop massive families living off the state

No. My answer is no. The government can't go into people's personal lives like that... If they ever do, I am emigrating to Canada.

Although I truly believe that over population throughout the world is the major contributing factor to almost all of our problems, I simply don't want the government regulating something else. They'e already involved in too many things they shouldn't be doing anyway. If it isn't clearly written in the Constitution as being a power of the government, the government should get out of the way.

I dont think they should limit the amount of kids you can have but limit the amount of support people receive from the government when they have to many kids. Only have what you can support yourself would be my policy!

Absolutely not! Nothing in the Constitution even hints at the government having that kind authority, and it would actually be in direct opposition to the Constitution.

The government really can't go out and say "don't have kids" at least not in the present, what they could do is subtly advertise adoptions and like contraceptions but at the end it'll take too much money and we at a point need a growing population to help our economy where its at

No. Besides, what happens if they go over the limit? Will they get punished? Will their kid be taken away from them? I mean, what if a condom breaks, or they slip on their BC pill... It's just not possible to regulate unless they force abortions or find a fool proof birth control method. (The shot might be 100% I'm not sure)
Besides the impracticality, it's completely wrong. It's a couple's choice how many kids they have. No one else's.

I think that this would help with world population
the world is extremely over-populated
I think at most families should be limited to 3 children at most. I think that is a fair amount. some people abuse the system and have kids for the money which is not fair to the child at all. so yes I vote yes to this question
I think this kind of law should be enforced in most countries/provinces/cities etc

Whilst I agree that the world is over-populated I think that governments should never impose lifestyle choices on the populace without a great concern e.g major health risks. I think they should encourage a low birth rate but I think that we shouldn't force families to simply stop- it would case a crisis.
From article 16 of the universal declaration of human rights-
(3) The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.

What I mean, is they wouldn't kill the baby, but say they're dependent on the government, they would just lose the benefits they get from the government, you should only have a child if you're financially ready and responsible.

I didn't think you meant killing the baby :) It's still beyond the scope of Constitutional powers granted to the government, and, a violation of Constitutional rights.

No! The world is a bit overpopulated but this is not the way to fix it.

Sadly, it's eventually going to come to that point. We're running out of space to live, to grow crops, to harvest resources from. Soon, I'm sad to say, our precious natural wonders will become ugly metropolises filled with a greedy race of primates, a.k.a humanity. We're more of a virus than a species. We need to control how much we effect planet Earth, because unless we find some way to even reach planets suited for human life, the earth is going to become a wasteland.
