I think with a bit of paying attention you can notice who are active members without a special system telling you.

^^ Exactly what I was thinking! (Its also hard to define active, I mean I presume if you take it literally, it would mean the users who are on the most (per day or however you base it), but a member should not always get recognition if they're very active but make posts of low quality, as Alex says, its the quality of the posts, not the quantity; so a user who isn't on that often, but makes high quality posts, probably deserves equal, if not more, recognition, than someone who is on all the time but only makes medium-low quality posts) <- If that made sense, I'm happy, if it didn't make sense, I'm still happy. :P
