why do i have an asterisk next to my name? How long does it take to get rep power?

The asterisk indicates that you're on invisible mode.

There no answer to that, since it's all dependent on how other people feel about your posts. People will rep you if they agree with your post, or negatively rep you if they disagree.

* every 6 months after you joined
