What are the first three battles that come to your mind (either your country or others):
1: The battle of Solferino
2: The battle of Carabobo
3: The battle of Yavin IV (because no other battle came to mind)
What do you think of your countries military past and present?
Well, in the past Simon Bolivar was an efficient Venezuelan general who united many south american countries to defeat Spain, so I guess I like the previous military. Now the present military is horrible, Chavez had the higher ranks hypnotized and they would do anything he said. Right now it is the least efficient thing to ever exist, and Maduro wont have a chance to keep it decent.

What is your country? Great Britain
What are the first three battles that come to your mind (either your country or others):
1:Waterloo
2:Trafalgar
3:Battle of Britain
What do you think of your countries military past and present? The empire where the sun never sets... We got that empire through blood haha. I think we had one of the best navies in the world for about 200 years. We've invented many great weapons- the tank, the ironclad, the turbojet engine and the submarine. We fought through both world wars and won. When we were starving and in retreat we saw of Hitler in the fields of Kent. We may be a nation of shop keepers but we'll never surrender.
But I admit that in the last 30 years we have declined slightly, but we still kicked the stuffing out of Argentina

What are the first three battles that come to your mind (either your country or others):
1: Battle of Waterloo
2: Battle of Trafalgar
3: Battle of The Nile
( I could name so many more, but I only asked for three :) )
What do you think of your countries military past and present?
My country has a fantastic and varied military past, most of it against the French to be honest, and it's the drubbings we have given them we are most proud of! We had an empire that spanned 1/3 of the planet and controlled the entire ocean. However a succession of weak governments has seen to it that we lose a lot of our military power. Only Margaret Thatcher's firm stand on the Falklands meant that we went to war in 1982 against Argentina. Whilst we still have a very effective fighting force (and if you want to judge the ability of a navy, you still have to judge it against the Royal Navy) it is, as a result of cuts, becoming far to small to be throughly effective against major powers.

The United States of America
1: Battle of Marathon
2: Battle of Lake Trasimene
3: Battle of the Alamo
Just a few of my favorites
America was born from the fires of war, and those flames have yet to burn out. We've had many difficulties with Europeans(Britain and Spain, for the most part), and even our neighbor Mexico has had a few run ins with us. I'm very proud to know that America one of the most superior armed forces in the world. Yet if I did have to serve under any man, it would be Hannibal. That man almost took down one of the greatest empires in the known world.

Our country had an unblemished record until Korea. We are probably the best equipped and trained all volunteer force this globe has seen in modern human history. Not a brag, but it's hard to find a better military meeting those guidelines. In war 2, we learned we could still kick shit outta the bad guys. In war 1 we learned the cost of doing business. In 'nam we learned that superman has kryptonite. In the last 300 years, never have so few do so much to/for so many.

Why? Because no military battles appeared in my mind, and Star Wars battles are just epic. XD But now, here's the real 3 battles that come to my mind:
1: Battle for Midway
2: The Somme
3: Operation Desert Storm
What do you think of your countries military past and present? South Africa's military sucks. The IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) owns the best airforce in the world, and one of the best sniper divisions aswell. America has the largest airforce, but not the largest ground military. That goes to Russia, and England still holds the place of largest naval power.

Ever since the end of World War II, we've been involved in some conflict. I can understand our involvement it the Korean War and Vietnam War. Those were proxy wars with the USSR. We lost in Vietnam, and we lost in Korea. And yet, we didn't learn our lesson.
We sacrificed our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan for nothing. We won, yes, but what did we really win? As soon as our troops leave, they'll revert to their old ways. A civil war in Afghanistan is inevitable.
In my opinion, we need to go back to the post World War I isolationist policy.

How lewd of you. I already stated that I know that there was an attack on Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor is a harbor on the island of Oahu, in Hawaii, the site of a major US naval base, where a surprise attack on December 7, 1941 via Japanese carrier-borne aircraft which inflicted heavy damage and brought the US into World War II. Pearl Harbor is a harbor, not an attack.

Just to point out, we didnt take advantage of world war 1 to become a leading world power. World war one put us on the map as an international fighting force capable of fighting in areas out side of the Monroe doctrine. WW1 helps to spin most of Europe into a weakened economic state, and Americas spending habits relied too much on credit to be effective, resulting in the great depression. By 1937 it looked as if we could slowly recover, and by 1939 Europe was deep in the shit creek without a paddle. Isolationisim becomes popular because the common sentiment is that WW1 and Europe by extension screwed us economically. However because of pearl harbor, the popular isolationist movement dies rather quickly, replaced by a flood of nationalism. Because WW2 requires huge amounts of industry, this fuels our economy, and since we provide to the rest of the allies, as well as ourselves, THIS is what makes us. World economic power, combined with generally leading and winning that war. comes communism, the division of Europe, and the Truman doctrine, and the world looks at the power which has been there in the past and has a good record, lowlandbehold the US and it's allies are once again in the thick of a war one not outright but in the shadows, hidden about as well as a turd in a teacup.

No, I thought I made this a little clearer, but it just seems I have confused people to my point. We did not take advantage of WW1 in fact you could argue that we were taken advantage of. I would say WW2 was happenstance, right place right time, that sorta thing. The cold war on the other hand, was all about taking advantage without being taken advantage of. Does that answer your question? Do you agree or disagree?

Depends on who you ask, in the pacific, America definitely won the war, while Russia did do a lot of fighting in Europe, don't forget that America and GB took everywhere from africa to Berlin and IDWhite could have gone further. also, I did not say America won the war for everyone, I said that America had been on the side which won the war, and that they had a nearly perfect war record and thus were a logical ally for those who were not part of the axis powers. Russia did not do most of the fighting, what they dd was take back the eastern block and their own country, land tracts that they had been steadily losing since the time of czars, land that they contended was theirs in the frat place. Russia lost the most people per capita, this does not translate to the most fighting. Besides everyone fought had and honorably, who needs to care about who fought more.

Yea, I see where you're confused, I'm on vacation so I'm not really describing things as well:lol:. But basically, the old war was a chess game played between the USSR and capitalist nations, specifically the US. The point of the game was to try to get the other guy in heck mate, only there was an endless supply of pawns, deplorable anywhere on the board. To win, you cheat by taking advantage of the other guts pawns. We won because we took their guys, and we either stopped them, took over them, or turned them. So when you asked earlier about taking advantage of a situation, I was trying to say that that was the point of the cold war.

The Russian front featured the cream of the German army and Waffen SS. The most senior and talented commanders - Guderian,Von Manstein, Von Bock etc all fought on the western front. The battle of Kursk had the largest tank battle in the world. They never owned the eastern block, they only owned part of Poland which they got in 39' from the Germans through the Ribbentrop pact. America didn't take Africa, Britain put in most of the leg work. They were not head of the allies, countries didn't join the allies because of america. And I very much doubt every one served 'honorably' in the war. There were mass war crimes on all sides.
Look at D-Day, the allies very nearly lost at Omaha and that was fought against very weak units made up of poles and Russians. Imagine if the divisions on the eastern front were on the beaches, we would of been massacred.
I know that america and Britain both fought hard, I just find it annoying when people ignore the soviet union purely because they were Communism and people seem to think it's a crime to admire anything communist.

I'm not ignoring the USSR, I'm not saying they didn't fight hard, I'm not saying that America is the reason countries joined the allies. Honorably was the wrong word, you're right. But see there's the thing, serving honorably is different from fighting honorably. The vast majority of fighters on all sides were honorable people, serving thier country in time of war. The allies put in a shit ton of legwork the globe over, read what I said again, America and GB took Africa, our guys got as captured at kaserine pass as the British. In case you forgot, all of France was a shithole in that time. Also the guys at Omaha were crack troops, not the reservists found on the rest of the wall. Your making the classic mistake. My granddad jumped into Arnhem but that doesn't deter my view on the second world war. I respect the fact that you've had family who served. I'm not saying that anyone fought harder, that is not how you view military history, I'm sure the native Americans fought very hard but that doesn't mean they were successful. The 352nd German infantry served on Omaha, they were made up mainly teenagers with NCO's from the German army. You stated that America won the war earlier on, I was merely saying that other nations including the USSR put in a lot of hard work and in my academic opinion I think that the USSR had the strain of having to move their industry to east, having most of their best units destroyed and 500 planes lost all on the first day of Barbarossa. The fought from 1941-1945 on there home soil where as the allies were lucky to fight in theaters were they had
a) 3-1 advantage over the axis ( Desert Campaign)
b) Total Air superiority ( d-day)
c) Motivated troops ( Italy)
I know the allies thought very well I just think that the Russians had a much harder job. Also refrain from telling me to shove my opinion up my backside, it may seem passionate but it comes across as gun ho.

What are the first three battles that come to your mind (either your country or others):
1: D-Day
2: Battle of the Bulge
3: Gettysburg
What do you think of your countries military past and present? Very hard to decide. I think that the USA has intervened in far more places/issues than we need to especially recently in the Middle East since we have left the country in arguably a worse position than they had before.
At the same time, it is hard to ignore human rights violations in countries, but it is true that we have entered countries for our own gain a lot of the time, with "helping the people" being a secondary goal.

Umm, I think we've done a lot of good stuff (WWII) but also relied too much on our military recently and it's gotten us in trouble.

Battel of britan is not realy a battel but a war couragiously faught by the british.

Battle of Britain is not really a battle but a war courageously fought by the british.
The Battle of Britain is the air war that was fought by fighter command against the Luftwaffe between may and October of 1940. It was an air battle, your referring to World War 2 above.
