Seeing as VT is so international, I would like to ask you all what your opinions are on our Queen?
For those who don't know, Elizabeth II is the second longest reigning monarch in Britain and the third longest reigning in the world. She is Queen of 16 countries including Canada and Australia and last year celebrated 60 years since her accession to the throne, to much public celebration.
Title and styles:
Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of Her other Realms and Territories, Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith
Elizabeth II, Dei Gratia Britanniarum Regnorumque Suorum Ceterorum Regina, Consortionis Populorum Princeps, Fidei Defensor

As much as I respect your opinion, I really cannot agree! Without her, this country would have gone to the dogs years ago! A lot of her power is wielded behind the scenes as she advises prime ministers on their decisions when she meets them each week. She is also one of the most influential ambassadors in the world, playing an important part in brokering deals and building relations with foreign countries.

I think people should get with the picture and get that monarchies today are just figureheads and are representative and kinda dumb... :/

I agree that some monarchies are just figureheads, but I disagree with you calling them dumb, no matter what context you used. The monarchy in question is the British Monarchy, which has been at the centre of politics since the early kings in the 8th century. Admittedly a lot of a monarchs power has been transferred to the government, but it is Her Majesties Government i.e. they act on behalf of her, and as such she approves the prime minister, can dissolve parliament, and has to sign every new law that comes through the Commons, and she has the power to refuse to sign.

I like the Queen, even though she may be a figure head, I still find her fasinating.

How? It was actually her father who put in most of the hard work after 1936? She doesn't advise the prime minister on their policy, that is the job of the cabinet. If she did their would be a crisis. She hasn't brokered any deals within the last 40 years, most of that is done through the UN or through the Government.
So how would the country be worse if it was someone else in power? She hasn't made any mass reform, she nearly had to resign after Diana because the british public through she was so out of touch.
Also monarch's pretty much sign anything, the last time one refused to sign was in 1708 under Queen Anne. I respect the Queen and I believe she represents Britain but I'm aware who does the work in this country to keep it moving

The Queen of England. I hold much respect to her. I doubt she is a figure head. All of England looks up to her, and if she were to die, the pound and the morale of England would drop drastically. Currently the only thing keeping the Pound at its pinecle is the Monarchy and the fact that English is the world's international business language. The Monarchy basically runs England aswell. Which is good in my opinion. Democracy is too corrupt.

Actually, the meetings with prime ministers are private, but interviews with prime ministers have revealed that they do ask her for advice, and they do take it. If she disapproves of a decision, it is quite likely that it won't go through the commons. She may not personally have brokered deals, but she has played a huge part in creating them and in building the relations around them. One of the reasons Britain is still a powerful and respected country, with a thriving tourist industry is because of our monarchy, specifically Elizabeth. After Diana was killed, it was a hard time and she and the family moved out of the public eye for a few days, but they are still human, and they had lost a close family member so it is perfectly understandable. Public support for her was huge when she appeared from mourning a few days after she died, and there was no chance at all of her abdicating.
What about the huge amount both her and the family do for charities not only in Britain, but across the world, and the number of people who have been helped by the monarchy? True, a lot of the power has gone, but that is because the role of the monarch has changed so dramatically over the last few hundred years.

Do you understand how the British Parliament works, she doesn't get involved with the commons at all apart from the one visit. I'm sure she disapproves of a lot of laws but she has virtually no influence of power over the commons. Churchill tried to set up a King's party in the 30's and it fell flat on it's face.
The role of Monarch has been the same for about the last 100 years, I admire her work but she hasn't done anything ground breaking, there is no need to be so fanatical about it. Also it is well know that she hated Diana, and that Diana hated both her and Philip. It was Blair who convinced her to come down from Balmoral and hold a state funeral. Not her decision, it was blair who saved her ratings. The Queen doesn't create or even aide any deals. Thats the foreign office turf

she is alright. i do not agree with monarchies in any country though as i do not believe it is democratic and unfair that a person is just born into such power. i have nothing against her personally and in fact i have alot of respect for her

She's as old as dirt and looks eerily like Betty White. I am no fan of the royal family. They are inbred nasty mother fuckers. Quite literally, they are mother fuckers.

I am from the US, but I have very strong ties to the United Kingdom. I absolutely enjoy your Queen as the Head of State in your Country. I wish the UK as a total monarchy, because, I don't like David Cameron or any other member of your Parliament. I don't mean any offence there. But I love with a burning passion the royal family.

This. She's a bit of a twat to be fair, I mean she didn't even smile at the Olympic opening ceremony, she looked like she couldn't care less. There is so much tourism at Buckingham palace and all that just because of the monarchy and quite frankly I find it stupid but I guess London just wouldn't be the same without the little flag that indicates that Queeny is back home.

Haha yeah I remember that, saying that I doubt my 88 year old Gran would have smiled having to watch it, I feel sorry for the queen sometimes, she must get so tired

She Queens...and vacuums (I hope people got the reference)
But yeah, I think she's alright. Seems like lately she's just Queen for ceremonial purposes, like the USS Constitution being in active service. Since the United Kingdom has been a "monarchy" for so long, I imagine it wouldn't sit too well with the English people for them to hear "Well, there's no Queen. No throne anymore, so get over it". But, as an American, you shouldn't quote me on that.

It's like the american with their constitution, it's part of our very history. It makes Britain Britain. The idea of a constitutional monarchy is fundamentally British and there is no alternative. If we had a president then he would become a figure head as the prime minister would still hold a lot of power, look at the German president- his name is never even brought up

I can't offer a political opinion, unfortunately. I don't feel that I know enough about the Monarch's political presence to form a sound opinion.
I like her, though. I'm fascinated by the whole royal family, and the concept of royalty in general. One of my relatives, who is an actress, played her stunt double during the Olympic Games opening ceremony last year. During a pre-recorded scene where the Queen's flying in a helicopter with James Bond, she jumps out of the helicopter - that was my relative lol

Sorry, I was not referring to you. Sorry for the confusion. I am very well aware that Ireland is independent from the United Kingdom. I know that UK consists of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Funny you should say that, because the MAN that did that was a guest on the One Show a while ago.
Anyway, I'm a fan of the royal family, but then again, I'm a stickler for tradition.

Elizabeth II is the second person for which I will say good riddance after her death, and Margaret Thatcher was the first.
Not only does she have no business ruling over a bunch of French people, keeping us under the throes of colonialism and pre-modern divine rule bullshit, she can't even keep to her figurehead status properly as she so eloquently demonstrated when she said she'd take a side against Quebec separating in the event of a "yes" vote. Fuck her.
