Hi:

I'm doing exercises at home, mostly in my room., push-ups, situps, squart thrust, stuff we do in PE mostly, no weights. I have 5 pound dumb bells, that's it.

How do you do a Chin-up correctly - narrow or wide hands, palms inward or outward? Should I use the dumb bells to get stronger, then do theChin-up?

There is no correct way there are different ways. The differences in grip focus on different muscles.

Palms outward puts more focus on your triceps. Palms inward on your biceps. The wideness of the grip affects various muscles in your back, generally wider grip is harder for most people.

There are other variations too but first you should work on the basics.

Best way to get to doing chin ups/pull ups is to do them assisted. Put a chair underneath you and use one leg to help you up. If you use minimal assistance to do the excercise it will still work out the muscles you need to do the excercise unassisted
