From my knowledge it is the fear of being judged, along with all those above^ Such as embarrassment, shame, privacy, religion, there are numerous reasons why it would be kept private. Some just don't care and will freely announce it to the world though. It all depends on the person.

I was asked by a group of kids and I said ya I did, major mistake I was picked on for a really long time. Some still give me a hard time when I see them at school.

For some reason, people have always regarded it as a bad thing (In company of others anyway!), a few centuries back people would say it makes you go blind or gives you diseases to give masturbation a bad name. But its not. It is natural, normal and a release. And then because others say its bad, lots of people worry and think only they do it. Then they don't want to admit to it to avoid being called names. Humanity is messed up. lol. Not really sure where this is going...

Embarrased/taboo... I bet you'd get the same response, if not a more negative response, if you ask girls too, despite the fact many of them masturbate too.
