A low-level female executive in her late 30's sits nervously at her desk fiddling with a pen when her phone rings. The voice on the other end of the phone tells her that Mr. Smith will see her now, and the color drains from her face. She hangs up the phone and rises slowly from her desk chair, and makes her way through a busy workplace and down a hall to a door with a plaque on it that reads Fielding Smith, Executive Vice-President of Marketing. She nervously knocks on the door then enters, trepidation clear on her face.

Mr. Smith, a man, and much bigger than she, rises from his desk and orders her to sit, while he paces around for a few moments.

Finally, he leans against his desk, looking down at her, and speaks. "Ms. Jenkins, we have a problem. I told you that I needed the NorCom report on my desk first thing this morning. It's now 10:30, and I haven't seen it. What do you have to say for yourself, young lady?"

She stiffens, then replies, "I-I'm sorry Mr. Smith, I tried. I really did. M-my kids are sick, and I've been dealing with that, my husband hasn't been at home to help me with them at all a-an-and I think he's been seeing another woman on the side. And to top it all off, my best-friend has been talking about me behind my back." Tears begin to slide slowly down her cheeks.

"You always seem to have excuses, don't you? I've told you time and time again that there were going to be consequences if you continue this behavior, haven't I?"

"Y-y-yes, Mr. Smith, you have."

"Then, I think it's high-time I demonstrate those consequences to you." This is said as Mr. Smith is removing his narrow leather belt. "Lower your trousers and underwear and bend over my desk, Anne. This is going to hurt me far more than it hurts you." He snaps the belt loudly, sounding like a gun shot in the well-appointed office....

Wait...what the hell? Obviously this would never happen. It would be illegal on so many levels, and, yet, it happens every day in millions of households in America, and it's perfectly legal in every state. The only difference? It's a parent and a child, rather than an employer and employee. It's legal in every state in America to do something to a child that, should it be done to an adult, would land someone behind bars so fast their head would spin.

What are your views on spanking? Let's try and not be emotional about this, but, rather, let's have a rational discussion.

I really don't want to say anything about this but I do have a bit to say on it.

Please don't feel pressured, but I'd be interested in hearing what you have to say.

Ah, well. I was spanked from birth until 10 or so, I know my parents love me, I have no animosity towards them whatsoever. I personally believe it's made me a better person....So I guess I have a biased view on the subject, but if it's done abusivly, that parent should be hung by their toes and slapped. I think there is a very fine line between correction, and physical abuse, and the latter I have never experienced. I'm sure some people have had bad experiences with it and will hate it until the day they die, I understand that, but not every parent is an abusive drunkard.

I personally do not like spanking, but it shouldn't be illegal. It's okay to make a few swats on a young child, to teach him or her a lesson, as long as it doesn't turn into abuse. I'm against using an object to hit though.

I had no idea it was illegal in the first place.

I had no idea it was illegal in the first place.

Suppose I should've said "...remain legal." In 30ish other countries, it is illegal, though.

Honestly if it turns into abuse, no. I was spanked once when I was a child; I was about 10ish.
But if it only happens a few times for serious offenses yes.

Yeah, it should. It's a decent form of discipline.

However, there is a somewhat fine line between a disciplinary spank and physical abuse.

it shouldn't be legal. it's a traumatic experience that will effect the subject both mentally and physically.

I've never been spanked (as far as I can remember) and I'm a disciplined person...
I don't think it should be made illegal but it shouldn't really happen.

The thing that bothers me about it is that no reasonable person would even contemplate physical discipline for an adult. It used to be acceptable for a man to discipline his wife, and I believe in my state there's still a law that says the stick can't be bigger around than his thumb. Obviously now any man hitting his wife would be guilty of domestic abuse. What makes it ok to spank kids? Are we sub-human? Hell, someone can even go to jail for spanking a dog, but not for spanking a kid. It just seems somehow messed up.

I've personally only ever been spanked one time, and it was by my Grandmother. I was nine and she walked into my room without knocking and caught me in a umm...compromising situation. She used a belt and kept saying she was gonna " beat the Jesus into me."

I'm not ok with spanking. But it shouldn't be illegal, making it illegal is pushing its limits on how a parent decides to punish.

Spanking does work, and it doesn't. But before a parent spanks their kid, they should cool off a bit. My mom still thinks she has a right to "spank" me (she says spank, I say hit. She'll really just start swinging the belt, whether it hits my butt or not, if it doesn't, its my fault). I also believe that spanking can escalate to hitting, which can escalate to full on abuse.

Like with me, my mom first started spanking, then she escalated to spanking me, whether it hits my butt or not. Then it went further and she started to punch my arms (shed punch them on the side while hitting the other one), then she would just start hitting my general lower body with the belt (and sometimes it'd hit my arms).

Parents should only spank young children, and only if they do something particularly bad. My mum has only hit me, what like, three times in my life. It should be used sparingly.
