View Full Version : Dad calling me spoiled?

I've had an iPhone 3GS for two years now, and we have an upgrade available. Yet he still won't get me an iPhone 5 for $200. I explained to him how bad my phone is (which it's terrible, I can barely use it) but no, he doesn't care. We'll be getting new phones in July but he's only going to let me upgrade to a 4S, which by that time the 5S will have come out. Now he's calling me spoiled and ungrateful. Would you say I am or is my dad just being cheap?!

It is a little spoiled. I mean, are you really throwing a fit over not getting the newest phone out? Really? If you phone was really bad enough that you can't use it, I'm sure he would be getting you a new one. The iPhone 5 probably isn't even that much better than the iPhone 4. $200 is a lot for a phone, especially if you've got both your parents and other siblings needed new phones soon.

Feeling this conflicted over not getting a new iphone makes you sound a little spoiled IMO... no offense.

But, if it was a Samsung Galaxy s4 or s3, that's a different story. :D

I've got an old Nokia myself, it does nothing but text and call. I feel that having something as awesome as an iphone 3GS is great in and of itself. Is your phone broken or something? Is that why it's barely usable?

It sounds quite spoiled in my opinion. If your parents don't feel they can't afford/don't want to get you the New IPhone then accept it. Your parents won't just be doing that to annoy you, they will have a reason! I had a 4s when the 5 came out I wanted the new one and didn't get it as soon as it came out, my parents made me wait for a few months they could easily afford it, trust me with it and had no reason against me getting it they just made me wait and its no bad thing. I appreciated it more and it taught me not to take things for granted. Wait it out the 4s isn't much different than the 5 other than looks

Yes.
You sound very spoiled.
The 5 is almost exactly the same as the 4S anyway; and the fact that you HAVE an iPhone, let alone a phone, is a privilege in itself.

We have an upgrade - my dad told me we'd be upgrading once we got it. We haven't upgraded. I'm not throwing a fit, I actually only asked him a couple of times, but my phone is so hard to use now.

-Broken vibration button (can't put phone on vibrate)
-Home button sticks all the time
-Major lag for any apps
-I get texts later than they were sent
-My wifi takes about two minutes to load when I turn my phone on
-Lock screen lags; whenever I put in the passcode it freaks out on me
-Photo snapshot lags
-Everything freakin' lags

I'm just mad about my phone, not really my dad. I just felt a need to vent somewhere about it. But it does get annoying, when I got my hopes up to get an upgrade, he says we can't, and I'm stuck with a phone three generations behind all the rest.

I'm going to agree with the others that paying $200 for a new iPhone 5 is a lot, and I don't blame your dad for not getting you one. I would go with something cheaper like a iPhone 4 or 4s which are both pretty close to the iPhone 5. It is not worth paying $200 for a iPhone 5, and if your parents don't have a lot of money to throw around, then I can understand your father's position.

I understand what you mean about how you have issues with your current iPhone, and your best bet is to upgrade to the least expensive option. Even if you go with an iPhone 4 you will be lightyears ahead of your current telephone, and I think the iPhone 4 is the only that is free with contract. Just go with the least expensive option, and chances are your father will agree to an upgrade. Don't go with the iPhone 5 because it's not worth it.

Over the short-term I would start getting rid of aps and other stuff on your phone that you don't need anymore like photographs. Chances are as the aps you have are being updated the aps are probably slowing down your phone. If your parents cannot afford a new phone for you now, then start getting rid of stuff which should help you. Also, if you are still having problems, then run over to the Apple Store to see if those folks can give you some ideas.

It's not worth it to get all worked up over a stupid phone. I don't even have a smart phone. Mine's basic. My girlfriend has a 3G and it'snot that much different than even a 5.

I get it if your phone is broken, but your being spoiled if you need the newest and latest. Unless your paying for it, he should decide what you get, don't whine because your dad wasn't willing to fork out $200 for the latest iPhone. An iPhone 4 is better then nothing, so please don't bitch or whine.

You would be spoiled if you got a new iPhone as soon as they came out. Like some people I know. Since that's clearly not the case, I'd say no, you're not spoiled.

Still, you're acting like a jerk and being ungrateful by being mad at your dad for getting you an iPhone 4S instead of a 5, especially when you already have a 3GS. While the 3GS is old and I understand why you want a new one, a 4S is not outdated at all and you should be very happy to have one.

You can wait until July to get an iPhone 4s. If your device lags, try restoring it and only installing the apps you need. Also, if the Home button sticks you can buy a new button and replace it, although you may need to find someone to do it for you as the process is quite involved.

Well to be fair i would say that iphones are not the best phones out there ... Many people think they are, To be fair you should go to the 4G and also i think he may pay your phone bills. Neverless you could always back your contacts up and music and accounts and reset the phone.

You're acting ungrateful and spoiled, no offense. Justin, I don't have a smart phone, but a slider that really only texts well. The audio quality sucks ass. I'm happy, because A, I really only text, and B, iPhones are a bit irritating IMO. I don't mean to sound rude, because I'm far from spoiled, but you need to chill...the...hell...out. Be grateful you even have a phone. I may sound like, well I don't know, but..., it's a privilege, not a right. Have a good day.

i wish my dad would lavish me with gifts like your dad did. But to be honest with you, you are a little spoiled. I hoped that my parents would get me a better phone when i tried to soak my phone battery in water because i wanted to get one of those expensive phones. but no, that didn't work and i did not get a new one. so you should consider yourself lucky for all the material possessions that you're given, dude.

Well...there's always the option of getting a job...and..you know....buying it yourself.

I believe in working for what you want. I bought my own car (Only $800, but reliable), my own Xbox 360, and I pay for my own gas. The way I see it, if I buy things myself, no one is going to make me feel like I owe them something.

On a side note, I own an HTC Evo 4G. Its about 3 years old, but it is still running great. Dropped it a million times, and it hasn't cracked once.

Honestly, you are, a little.
While an old phone can get pretty damn annoying... I use an older Nokia phone, it doesn't do much, and I bought it myself for about £20.
And the service is paid for by me.

Receiving texts later than they were sent is usually a network error, not an error with your phone.

Is it one of those Nokias that created the Grand Canyon?

Your iPhone lags? You're holding it wrong!

In all honesty. He's paying for it, and at your age it's not like it's even crucial for you to have a phone. I didn't have one when I was 14.
Why are you stressing out? If he's offered you a 4S... that already puts you waaay above 95% of people your age. It's something above and beyond what you'll need.

If you want to upgrade to the 5, get a job, work, and pay for it.

Or better yet, get a job, work, and pay for a brand new Samsung Galaxy S4! :D
Seriously though, the S4 is incredible compared to IPhones.

Aww, look at the little boy throwing a tantrum because daddy won't get him a new toy!
Grow the Hell up, man! I've seen things kids should never have to see and you're complaining about not getting a new mobile!?

I have friends who have to work to help their parents (who both work themselves) keep the roof just over their heads along with going to college and paying for that, too. Some days, they actually go without food just so they can learn and have a bed to sleep in.

I can't live at home because my mum was drunk and abusive. You think I stayed up every night crying and wishing for a new this or that? I wished to either get out of that house or not wake up the next day.

You are so ungrateful, it's unreal.

Thank you very much! Spoiled children, 12 year olds with Iphones and everything also pisses me the Hell off.

Speaking of spoiled children - I'm related to one. My little sister is 7 years old. She got a Kindle for Christmas and has a mobile of her own. She has two pet Gerbils she pays no attention to whatsoever and before I moved out/got kicked out, my mum made me move out of my room into the box-room so my sister had more room for her toys. Most of which she doesn't even play with.

You better think about people like my friends below the poverty line and people like myself before you even think about asking for anything new and sparkly.

There's more to life than the new computers.

I'll warn you, I'm always pretty direct/blunt/straight to the point, etc whenever I read a post about things that piss me off :P

But, I try to be fair at the same time. I didn't call him ... many... names, I gave him a reason to change his mind and hopefully, he'll realise and become a better person...

Sorry guys, when I was writing this I was just mad at a lot of other things at the time and I wanted to vent about it, through the whole iPhone thing. Yeah I really do want an iPhone but I don't really care as much as it seems in my original post. My dad was just being a jerk about other things and it bothered me. So sorry again.
