Had no idea where to post this, so please move this if it's in the wrong place.

So I'm putting together a list of books and comics to get my little cousin for his birthday this August. Anyone got any suggestions of books that'd be good for a 9-year-old? So far I've got:

The Little Prince

Because it's a classic and also it's really good.

The Boy's Body Book: Everything You Need To Know About Growing Up YOU

Because I'm gonna have to have The Talk with him, and this'll make it a lot easier and less confusing for him.

The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes: A Calvin and Hobbes Treasury

Because Calvin and Hobbes is great.

The Giving Tree

Because every kid should read this book.

Where The Sidewalk Ends: A Collection Of Poems And Drawings By Shel Silverstein

Because Shel Silverstein is great.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, Vol 1

Because he likes Spider-Man, and Miles Morales is really good as Spider-Man. Plus it's just a really good comic.

Avengers, Vol 1: Avenger's World

Because he also really likes The Avengers, and also it's really good.

Superman: Earth One

Because Superman is cool, and hopefully will teach him the same thing he taught me: That you should be a good guy simply for the sake of being a good guy.

Where The Wild Things Are

Classic kid's book.

The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz (Graphic Novel)

Because it's really good.

I might not be able to get him every single book on this list because I'm a poor college kid and I don't have much money, but I figure I should start narrowing down choices now. Anything you guys think I should add?

I think it's awesome that you're getting him books! Those are all excellent choices, too. Good job, man!

Thanks! I figure since I usually spend around $50-$60 getting him one video game, why not spend the same amount and get multiple books? Plus I figure I should probably start getting him things that'll have a positive effect on him, or at least make him feel, y'know?

Yup. And if you instill him with a love for reading, so much the better. You might wanna think about some classic adventure stories, too. Robert Louis Stevenson is good. And I read The Swiss Family Robinson when I was about that age and loved it.

Yeah I was thinking about those too, and Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, and Peter Pan as well. But I thought I'd wait until I know his reading level has improved, and he actually likes reading. Then I'll get him start getting him more classic and complex stuff like that.

Hey, that's great you are giving books. I don't have any suggestions but had a thought which was some of these are more for a nine year old and others maybe a little more advanced. For example, I wouldn't give him The Little Prince first.

Yeah I think you might be right. I already took a few Batman comics off this list for that reason, Batman gets pretty dark sometimes. I'll have to check out the Little Prince and think about it some more. I've never actually read it, just seen snippets and heard about it.

I was thinking about the literary style of The Little Prince and possibly the vocabulary. It depends on your cousin's reading skill and interest.

Yeah maybe I'll wait to give him that one. He's in second grade now but I think his reading level is like a grade behind because of some stuff that happened in preschool.
