Since I am using tapatalk on my smartphone I seem to be online on VT 24/7. I don't use a general tapatalk pw and don't press log out before I close the app.
Can this be the reason?

Android doesnt close the apps when you click the back button. It only minimizes them so this can be the why of being always online :)

Yeah, you need to log out for it to stop showing you online, and it would be a good reason to as having a constantly-pushing background data is sure to deplete your battery life.

Alternatively, in Settings > Applications > Running services, select Tapatalk and press "Stop". Or download one of those task managers from Play, and kill the Tapatalk process when you don't need it.
