View Full Version : Reasons for cursing?

Just something I've been thinking about.
I have read a lot of things (books, posts, news articles, ect) where cursing is very common in the language. Personally I try to refrain from cursing, swearing, whatever, as much as I can. Truth be told I am not perfect, just like anyone here I will occasionally say a bad word.
But my question is- are there actually reasons for cursing? I mean, I was raised around people saying nasty things. So naturally I will repeat it. But is there other reasons why people curse?

I usually do it when I feel like it'll enhance what I'm saying, or make my point a little clearer. "That's fucking stupid" tends to have a bit more bite to it than "That's stupid".

Other than that, it's just kinda fun. I don't like to overdo it though. Then it just becomes a crutch to lean on when you can't think of better words. Plus it loses it's potency and it's just not as fun when you say it all the time. Also if someone uses the word "fuck" more than once or twice in a sentence, I usually don't take them as seriously, I dunno.

That's just me though.

It actually comes from a certain region in our Brain. When the earlier stages of man e.g cavemen wanted to express there anger or frustration they would scream or yell. This is where the basis function comes from, just like sometimes you can't actually stop yourself from swearing if your in severe pain.

There was a study at Exeter uni which had three groups of people put there hands in a deep bowl of the ice, the first group were not allow led to say anything at all. They only managed to keep there hands in for about 30 seconds before pulling out. The second group were able to say the word pencil, so they were screaming it as they kept there hands in the ice, but after about a minute they pulled out. The last group were allowed to swear and they managed to keep there hands in it for over 2 minutes.

So basically it's a very slight pain killer in a sense, it helps your mind deal with pain

I swear mostly emphasis, but I hear and say it so much it's just another word for me. I don't really think about it, it just naturally comes out.

A lot of the time, actors have to swear on TV and film because the writers feel that it adds to the effect. 'Get him the fuck out of there,' sounds more urgent than just 'get him out of there.' However, when you have people swearing in every sentence, it really doesn't add anything, and it just sounds tacky.

I swear for emphasis, as well.

I curse a lot. :P

I think it's OK to let off some steam that way. Or sometimes I just do it to add more emphasis and add a bit more emotion to what I'm saying.

Because I fucking can :P

No, but being serious, it's kind of like a stress/pain reliever. It's actually proven to reduce pain levels. Also, it probably brings the impression of maturity. Me? I've been kind of brought up that it's alright to curse in the right situations.

I curse for emphasis, to get my point across, and sometimes just because I'm angry and feel like it helps me to calm down a bit.

Curses are just words that humans decided to taboo out.

It's no big deal. Curse however much you like. Personally, I curse because I can. They are just words, and useful words at that.

Honestly, I have no intentions to use any curse words. Even if all my friends do it, I still have no intents on saying it. Usually I will just say it as quoting someone. I just find that it has no meaning, and it's really trashy. There are better words that are more descriptive for what you are feeling at the moment than to use a curse word. I just think it's really trashy. It's a major turn off for me to find a girl who just curses. It's not pretty.

I totally agree bro. *but*! If I ever use a curse word it's usually for humor, or emphasis, the worst words I use are "ass" and "damn" I will never ever use the "f-word".

I think for some people it's just a habit, and a bad one at that. These are the people (and we all know some of these people) who drop the f-bomb every third word. But, then again, sometimes, a swear word is the only word that will work. I rarely swear, but when i do it's either for effect or because I just stubbed my toe.

Swearing, when used correctly, adds style and flair to your sentences. Instead of boring, weak adjectives, you should use a stronger one such as fuck.
Consider the difference in these sentences' meanings:
This is taking way too long versus This is taking too fucking long.
The latter has a finer point.

So impress your language teachers today! Use swear words generously wherever you feel them applicable!

It's scientifically proven that if we hurt ourselves then swear, the pain lessens.
