For Americans, how do you feel about the current political status of Puerto Rico? Do you believe it should remain how it is or become a state? As a Puerto Rican I really have mixed feelings about this issue, its alot of people who want statehood and some people who want full independence. I am against independence 100% because I know if we did become independent we'd fall into economic failure like many other countries in Latin America( Columbia, El Salvador)

from what I've seen online its really unstable there. I think we should leave things as they are.

Yeah..Its killings and the drug trade is wild, though if thats what you consider "unstable" then how about Chicago and other inner city areas?

Maybe if all that is going on it would be good for the US to take control of Puerto Rico, to kinda smash all of that which is going on. It's small enough for the US to control and its a winnable war, no where bear the scale and size of Mexico.

The United States government already operates there and it hasn't been getting better.
I'm content with how things are. The relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico has kept things relatively stable considering history and economy. Statehood can't be achieved until they demonstrate factors of stability in their own system (courts, legislature, security, etc.) Puerto Rico would become a state before it becomes independent, so the idea of independence is pretty out of the question.
Also recognize: If PR became a state, it'd be entitled to positions in the House of Representatives, which, if maintaining its size, would take seats away from current states. What state would vote to allow another territory to take away their political representation?

We already control Puerto Rico as our territory. :P
I would like it to become a state, just cause, I'd think that'd be cool, idk.

Clueless.
I know it is a U.S. territory, but anything less basic than that; I don't.

Puerto Rico becoming a state would take political representation away from existing states how?

If there are the same number of Representatives, and Puerto Rico would be entitled to some of the Representatives, some of the other states would have to give up their representatives so PR may have theirs. It's subtraction.

In the House of Representatives, each state has a number of representatives that is determined by the population of that state. Off the top of my head, I think it's 1 per 30,000. In the Senate, each state has 2 senators. A new state would take no representation away from existing states.

The Apportionment Act of 1911 set the number of House of Representatives at 435. Unless that were changed, that admission of PR into the Union would take representatives from other states.
Also, I agree, the Senate representation of PR would not affect the other states'. That's not what I'm arguing.

Apportionment laws were intended to be made every 10 years with the census. One would hope that with the addition of a 51st state, Congress would actually do some work so that no existing state would lose representation. All I'm saying is that it isn't an immutable number.
Besides, I think it'd be cool to see a new state added in my lifetime. :P
