I have been reading some stuff lately (i am never reading anything my mother emails me again...) and it has had a lot to do with marital rape and all that. I know most of us here are too young for marriage, but I still thought it would be an interesting topic.

What do you think of marital rape? Is it really 'rape'?

Yes it is rape. Rape is unwanted sexual intercourse. If you go to court your defence cannot be she was my wife I had every right to rape her. This is just another idea that is somehow obtained from christianity

As far as the law's concerned yes it is - man does not have the automatic right to sex his wife anymore. Most countries changed the law around the 1980/90s
But
1/ the wife might feel obliged to have sex with her husband even if she didn't really want to, or vice versa. She might not even resist too much if he forced himself on her
2/ the wife probably wouldn't report the rape as it would obviously mean the end of her marriage

Sex by force is always rape no matter what any religion says.

Yes it is. No matter what if it was forced it's rape.

Thanks so much for all the answers. I am studying law (ugh) and this came up. I just wanted some different answers to see what people believe on the subject. I do NOT support marital rape, I find it grotesque. Just for clarification.

Oh course it's still rape. Marriage isn't owning another person, and it isn't infinite permission to fuck them whenever they want. Each and every time both parties need to say yes, if one says no, and the other forces the other, then it's rape.

It's that simple.

Marriage is not owning a person, therefore you cannot just do whatever you want to them.

I doubt anyone today would support marital rape - although it was legal in most countries until fairly recently.

From a legal standpoint one issue is how the crime should be punished - more severaly than "stranger" rape or less
More severely - marital rape is a complete breach of trust, the woman doesn't even feel safe in her own home etc. If a man would rape his own wife what else would he do?
Less severely - if you're going to be raped by someone maybe better somebody you know than a total stranger who might kill you etc

Obviously not being a woman I can't imagine which type of rape would be worse.

Marital rape, and rape in general, doesn't just affect women. While it is less common, men can be raped as well.

OK but fair to say rape would be more of a concern/fear for women than men.

Point was if a woman was going to be raped would she rather it be by her husband or a total stranger.
