View Full Version : Your thoughts on BMW?

I have alot of respect for BMW, and I think they make great cars. The quality of the interiors is always much better in comparison to Mercedes-Benz who now do it more 'on the cheap'.
Mom currently drives a BMW 2008, with 21" Alpina rims and we both adore it. Its a black, 5 litre petrol.
Imagine this car in black, and there we have it - same wheels without chrome-lined windows
http://www.bekkers.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/BMW-Alpina-B6-S-4001.jpg
We had a BMW Z4 for a short period, but the weather wasn't good enough for the car and it no longer was practical.
I personally believe BMW should forget the 1 Series, as there is no point in providing this bathtub on wheels to the public - I think it gives the company a bad name.
I know alot of people hold grudges against BMW and other German car manufacturers, but what is your view?

I think the 1M is spectacular. But I'm more of a MBZ guy. I'd take the new E63 AMG S over an M5. And I think the X range is outdated. I love older BMWs. I'd kill for an E46 M3 Laguna Seca edition or an E39 M5 though. I love those cars.

Mercedes Benz interiors are on par with BMW, if not better.
I do like BMW though. My parents have had 2 M3's, 2 X5's and one 5 series over the years.
Reliability was an issue for some, they don't like Australian conditions I guess.
I think they are a well built German car and they offer great engineering.
I also think the 1 Series is a brilliant car. It was actually made to bring back "driving purity" which has been lost over the years with electronic steering and driver aids.
The 135i and 1M (both run a twin turbo straight six) are awesome cars.

All of the stuck-up, rich, snobby people drive BMWs in the san fran bay area...
It's the stereotype here.
I don't like them at all.

I like BMWs.... But I like Mercs more. Mercs look more mean, and are more of a 'look at me' car and I like that.

BMW makes some real nice cars! They look great and perform great for the most part, but that comes at a price and some of their cars are real expensive. My stepdad has a 7-series and its so cool :)

I don't mind BMW's. A lot of people in my neighborhood have them. However, the beef I have with them is not the car itself but with some people who drive BMW's. They think they're hot shots and don't obey the laws of the road (they speed, park illegally, driving through stop signs). Personally, I prefer Audi's to BMW's. Auto snobs will say that Beemers are much better, but I prefer the design and performance of Audi's.

Well, when you can afford a car that is so much better than an Audi, then you will start doing California stops and go 10-20 MPH over the speed limit!
Ra
My family has mostly bought Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, and even a Bentley. I personally prefer the new Mercedes Benzs over new BMWs. We have recently had a: S63, G-wagon, GL550, E63, and a CLS. In the past 5 years we stayed away from BMW since the new breed of M-B came out. Have we forgot, that most of the safety features such as emergency brake assist and lane departure warnings have all come out first on Benzs and not Audi, BMW, or Toyota's crappy Lexus brand! Yet I do feel that the older BMWs look better than the older Mercedes Benz.
I despise when people say that the people with BMWs or Mercedes are snobs. Well I have to admit that we may actually be snobs, but when you can afford a sporty car, even a sporty executive sedan that is as fast as a Ferrari like our 2010 S63 AMG, that costs 2-4x more than what the middle class person can afford, then you unofficially HAVE THE RIGHT to drive like that. After all, you do make more money, you have to show it off somehow. How else to show that but to cut someone off or pass them going 85mph?

We have a 2011 535xi and I personally think it's a waste of money. The company paid for it, so it's not coming out of my parents pockets, but I still think it's a little wasteful. It's fun to drive and all I'll give it that, I just don't see why exactly that's the car my dad picked. I think an Infiniti or another Lexus would've been a little more practical choice. I like them, I just don't see myself wanting to spend that much on a car lol, I'd rather live in a nicer house.

I love BMWs, compared to its rivals Audi and Mercedes. Over time audi has become tinier while the Beemers have become slightly more preferable. I have to agree that M sport is quiteclose to the performance of Audi's RS but i don't think that it woould be able to take over the brutal performance of the Merc's AMG. Out of all the luxury convertibles i love the BMw 6 series better. and all the BMW i series i.e BMW i8. Really appreciate BMWs measures taken to produce more economical cars

No they are not overpriced. We had a Mercedes S65 amg that went 0-60 in the same time as a 3 year old Ferrari or Lambo. Keep in mind that a S class is a fully loaded ultra luxury sedan. If that type of car can go that fast and have so many features, including a onboard mini fridge and sat. tv, and Lambo has to sacrefice a heater or air cond. for performance, then the Lambo is way overpriced. Our $212,000 S65 with a 0-60 of 3.8 sec in is cheaper than a $220,000 Ferrari 458 that goes 0-60 in 3.2 sec. The mercedes comes with 3 exra luxury seats, more safety features, and more luxury features than a Ferrari. But that is mercedes benz and this post was about a BMW 7 series, which sucks big sweaty balls. Literally, My balls stick to the seats of my friend's mom's 750li even when I wear shorts!! For that price I think I would prefer a Maserati GranTurismo...http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YLpMdpEeJDk/UK-ojcKChlI/AAAAAAAAIbA/luu5NiC3J8Y/s1600/animaatjes-maserati-gran-turismo-12663.jpg.
I think BMW is going pretty far with the 7 series, but will never reach the prestige of a Mercedes-Benz

Well, I misunderstood your point then, sorry. I have always considered BMW the sporty brand of luxury/premium cars, and mercedes just being the classy and " I have to evidence my wealth with this comfy car" one, and audi being something in between.

The bmw's are cool, but I think there's just a refined luxury that the Benz have that the bimmers don't. I have always thought the E-class is the best mid-sized sedan.
And Audi? Quit with the goofing around we're talking about serious european cars here.

I disagree. My family have had quite a few BMW's and we have never had any issues that weren't covered under warranty, without argument or hassle.
Every service/repair we got a car similar to our own to use whilst ours was at the dealership, and servicing (whilst a little more expensive than other makes) was not overly expensive considering the service involved.
That's one of the key differences with manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes, Audi, etc. You are not only paying for a car, you're paying for the post purchase support and service.

lol this thread made me laugh :)
i'm not a big fan of new BMWs i own a e30 340 with a lot of blood an swat in it, because of the strict Croatian rules ( till age of 24 a driver is categorized as a young driver and is not permited to drive a car stronger than 80 kw :( ) i'm not able to drive it legally on the streat but lucky me has a track near my house :) dad and uncle are mechanicks so as a kid i grew up with cars :)
the engine swaped in on custom mounts lol :) 289 bhp 400 Nm :) a lil beast

sry for the bad pic but i dont have a lot of space in the garage and it isnt pretty now all torn up :)
i wanted to buy a e36 but none were in good conditions
e30 is still work in progress but i tell you it's evil :)
I wouldn't trade it for any other car in the world ( maybe the GT-R or the Rimac Concept_One :) )
