Not sure why you want to come here and not China. It is even cheaper to live in China and you would get a better university education at the same time. I mean, Peking University is in the top 50 of the best universities in the world.
But if you are comparing SA to Bulgaria, then yes it is cheaper. But there is a lot more crime here and the public transport system is very poor. If you are thinking of going to university here, then maybe look at UCT (https://www.uct.ac.za/).
But seriously, you will be better off studying in the Ukraine or China (cheaper and better education).

if your white don't go to south Africa. Extremely high levels of crime, lack of employment or equal opportunities due to the quota system. I know since I've had 50% of my south African relations move over here or to the states due to the conditions out there

South Africa is not the place people make it out to be!
Sure, it is dangerous, but you have to be careful wherever you go. There is crime everywhere...

What ever you do, DO NOT COME TO SA!
If you are white, you become open game for murder and the ones who do it get off without the cops doing anything about it. Here, they have gone ahead and undermined everything Mandela has done for the country, and overturned the equal rights. Whites are being taken out of jobs because of the B.E.E and many more have been forced to go live in the shanty towns or caravan parks. (Like Me, I live in a Caravan Park)
It is deffinately not the all safe haven that the ANC makes it out to be. This country is completely anti white, and will sooner kill us all or chase us out of SA before letting us try to rectify Apartheid and make up for the mistakes our ancestors did during those times.
If you value your life and existance, don't come here. Your safer going to England, China, USA or Russia.

My friend intends to go work in south Africa. So I'm rather interested in what people have said on here about south Africa.

Consider - do you want to stay in SA after graduation? Will you be able to get a job? If you want to leave, will an SA degree be any use anywhere else?
If you want to go to an English speaking university that'll be widely recognized, you could look at an American university abroad (some are much cheaper than American unis, some are expensive, some have scholarships). The American degree you can get from American University in Cairo, American University of Central Asia, American University of Paris, etc, will probably be more international recognized than a SA degree. But I'm just surmising.
I'm also interested in what people have to say about SA. I don't know too too much about the country but I briefly considering doing an exchange year there.

Let's ignore the crime rates and poverty for a moment. What do you want to study? Do the universities available in South Africa offer mayors for what you want to study? Do they have a good level of education? Would your future job make more profit at a developed or developing country?

I do not currently live in south africa, but i have before. IT is cheaper but not the cheapest place. education levels depend where you go, i was there for elementary school at AISJ, private school, so it was good. But yes, there is a lot of crime.

If you are looking to study in SA I would recommend checking out both the universities of Cape Town and Witwaterstrand. Its a great country , crime and politics aside :)
I have grown up in SA and in my final year of high school
