View Full Version : Is Racism a double bladed sword?

Just saw an Ad for a dating website. Nothing out of the odd there, right? Well, it turns out that it is strictly for the African American Community. I thought to myself, "What if a website for strictly Caucasian people was advertised? Would that be considered racist? Or any other race in general?" Now, I am far from racist. I was just pondering this while I saw the commercial. If this sounds slightly odd, my mind is racing at about 100 miles an hour right now.

Yes it would. There's dating websites for every kind of person from fat people to Jewish people but no dating website strictly for whites.
Fair to assume lots of white people only want to date other white people but it would be illegal to run a website catering to that taste.

Well, yeah, it is a double bladed sword, or at least it should be.
But as far as dating sites, just for black people, I don't see a problem with it.
Some people just simply prefer dating someone of the same race as them. Maybe it just makes them more comfortable, or whatever.
But no, it isn't racist, just preference, there's a difference.

I actually agree with this, same thing with the Black Entertainment Television channel (BET) if there was a White Entertainment Television channel I'm sure people would be outraged.

Thats what I call "Closet Racism" which isnt meant to be racist but has some coded discrimanation in it. Example would be 2 White Ladies talking about how one is about to move to a new area, the lady says the schools in that area have a large population of black students and suggests she considers private school. Thats not racism, just discrimatory bigotry

Personally, I see no difference between an all black dieting site and an all white one. Both are unnecessarily exclusive, despite the fact that one is viewed as acceptable, while the other would be viewed as racist. I don't see why anyone would care what race their partner is. Race is so completely irrelevant.

Let me guess, blackpeoplemeet.com
Yeah I guessed the same thing, but technically you cannot be removed from the site if you're not black. It's probably for people looking for other black people, so if you're white and you sign up on that site, don't expect to be hit on or anything.

It's not completely irrelevant. Some people just want to date and make babies within their own race and there is nothing wrong with that. Every dating site has a ethnicity/race section and asks if they want to date within their own ethnicity/race or outside of it.

I agree with most of the other opinions on here, it's just a matter of preference on dating sites, the same way there are Christian dating sites and gay dating sites, it's just helping people find their preference. It's not racist, I think you're overreacting.
The thing you have to remember is is that every dating website, the majority will be white and straight and not super religious. That's just how it is. Minorities just need a little extra for lack of a better word "help" sometimes. :)

That's technically racism, yeah.
It shouldn't be. And it shouldn't be considered racist to have a white-exclusive dating site, either. Objectively, they're just sites for people looking to hook up, and a lot of people like to hook up with people of the same race. Doesn't make them racist, that's just the type of person they're attracted to.
I might get a lot of shit for saying this, but whatever. I think black people get away with racism far easier than white people, purely because of their history of being victimised. Excuse my generalisation, as it's obviously not the case for the entire race. However, if I, a white person, were to run around shouting racial slurs against black people, I'd be hated. My neighbour, who happens to be Aboriginal, often walks around the street at night claiming that Australia is 'her land' and that her white neighbours are 'white c*nts.' Yet no one bats an eyelid.
All I'm saying is that racism works both ways. You can't discriminate against a certain race and then cry about your own race being discriminated against.

I guess that would also be like saying "There is a Black Entertainment Television, so why isn't there a White Entertainment Television?"
Technically, it could be construed as racism, if one feels the need to go the extra mile to say it is. Its all a matter of perspective, I think. There's always that person that says anything is racist because the word "black" or "white" was included in the wording.

What if we...drop the racism topic? Honestly, the world would be a better place if we could all get along.
Easier said than done.

Sorry to be nitpicky, but I think the phrase you were looking for in the title was "double standard" wherein one action taken by one group is considered acceptable where the same action taken by a different group would be considered unacceptable.
"Double bladed sword" or, more commonly, "double edged sword" refers to a beneficial action that can cause negative consequences if you aren't careful.
Although a dating site catering exclusively to members who fit a specific criteria isn't racist, it's just exclusionary.

Yes it is racist but whether people will accept it or not. White to Black is racist and can get you arrested and on the news. Black to White racism isn't a big deal due to the enslavement of their race and all that jazz

Racism is a useful card to play for minority(or even majority) groups who want quick money and benefits. You can get into top universities with terrible scores if you're in an exotic or minority race. Black, native Americans, and the like have a much higher chance of getting into many universities than a white person, regardless of scores. Or so I've heard. Because if you deny one of them, that's obviously because they're black! How racist of them! Just wait until the media hears, when I'm suffering from emotional distress and other things. Then you'll be sorry!
And so it goes every time.
Really, though, I don't pay attention to all that. If you want to have your MesopotamiansMeet.com, then you should by all means have it. Don't let me get in your way.

Racism is a very strange issue due to the fact that it is mainly still a very sensitive topic within the majority of countries. I personally as a white person do not find the dating website racist at all, however I'm sure someone else could quite easily argue that it is. It all depends on the spectrum, some people have a very high tolerance others do not. However the one thing I cannot stand is when quotas have to be filled, considering most of my south African family had to move over here because they simply couldn't get jobs due to there race

A lot of people will pull the race card whenever they feel threatened because it's an easy way to get some people to back off. It's pretty ridiculous if you ask me, and pretty pathetic that somebody will make such wild accusations against somebody else for, most of the time, no reason. A lot of minorities, and sometimes majorities too, complain about racism and about how people are unable to see in grey with everything being equal; but then they create groups specifically for themselves and exclude other minorities and majorities from it. Very contradictory and only makes people look like asses for causing a tizzy and then continuing the problem for themselves.

I'm against the idea of all Black dating websites --- and I'm black myself.
How are we ever going to get anywhere when we still segregate ourselves from other races? It's stupid.

You really shouldn't generalize like that. Acknowledging the fact that you're going to get crap for it doesn't make much difference. If you obviously know generalizing like that is wrong, why do it? There is a better way to prove your point ... a point I actually happen to agree with.

Well all the groups of people you just named are minorities. I mean There aren't as many of them, so a dating website would be useless for white people because there's so many of us. It's like making a car club with people that own Toyotas. There are too many people for it to be special. I hope that didn't sound offensive... Sorry if it did.

Did you notice that I actually acknowledged my generalisation, and corrected myself by stating that it is obviously not the case for either race in it's entirety? I made the initial generalisation because I felt that I later rectified it.

So then there is no purpose in that. I really am not trying to get into some lengthy debate with you, it's not really the reason I'm on this VT to begin with. I just wanted to make sure you were aware of that.

I agree with Rob and Shyy. On one hand it's about being a minority...An all white dating site would make more sense if you were white and living in Africa. But also the more a race just sticks to itself and doesn't integrate or mix with others then the more racism spreads though I do understand that people are probably more attracted to people of their own race, it's just biology.

True. But if you're white presumably you can join any dating site and where it says who would you like to meet under the box where it says "ethinicity" just check white and uncheck black, asian etc - so you'd only see while people. Same outcome as joining an all white dating web site but not racist.
The point about races sticking together is valid but whites are not allowed to stick to their own race whereas blacks are, which is wrong.
As you say this does nothing to help races integrate because it's unfair to whites and thus causes resentment toward blacks.

It's because in cultures like ours, it's often the caucasians who have been prejudice to others. Not to make assumptions about every white person, but cultures like these still have problems with segregation. It's also cause Caucasians are the majority in the USA.

I just thought it was funny you were saying colour doesn't matter but posting in green. Joke :)
The colour of a woman's skin does effect her beauty to me, same as her hair colour/height/body shape effect her beauty.
One day I might see a black girl that's attractive to me but hasn't happened yet.

Here's what bugs me about the whole issue: other races, denominations, orientations, etc. have fought for years to get equality, but now you have all sorts of seperate things for them. Why are there BET awards? Why are there Hispanic awards? I'm not saying that these people are untalented or don't deserve awards, but why do they need a seperate contest?

March 20th, 2013, 08:34 PM
The minorities strive to be equal, but they can't help but bring up the past. And things like BET, black history month, etc, simply perpetuate racism. I've heard a girl call my entire school racist because in a mock election the majority voted for Mitt Romney. People simply should not be concerned about skin color when it comes to something as important as an election. The race card is simply played far too often.
