View Full Version : Has anyone done the change from Apple to Android?

Yes another what phone thread.

I'll be upgrading in a few months and I'm hit with that question. To go for a Galaxy 4 or iPhone 5S? I'm coming from an iPhone 4S.

Has anyone changed from Android to iPhone or vice versa?

I like the idea of having my back up done, and uploading it straight onto the new phone with Apple, and there are a few things I'm worried about going to Android:

What is compatibility like? My home stereo has iPod connectivity, plus I have an iPod dock. My car has Bluetooth music streaming for iPhone (might for for Android? Idk). Everything caters for Apple, do you have the same support for Android/Samsung? At the same point, the different charging point means an adapter needs to be used for my dock and stereo which may be just as bad.

I use it as an iPod as well, obviously the iPhone wins over Android here. How's the music player on the Samsung?

How difficult to use is the Android OS?

What is the storage like for Samsungs?

So has anyone done the change? Is it a PITA?

If you have a aux in on the dock then you can play music through this but you won't be able to dock it because the Samsung will be a micro USB which is different to the apple connection on the dock also android can stream music via Bluetooth as well so you can play over Bluetooth in that's car

I had a buddy go from an SIII to a i5 he wasn't happy but that's because he's coming from an android which has a larger screen and better specs.

When it comes to usability and UI, the iPhone is the way to go.

I am a tech reviewer (get phones in for review for free) and have done multiple Galaxy phone reviews, never have I liked them more than my iPhone (which is still my main phone.)

I went from a 4S to a Galaxy S3 LTE just for the 4G, however, since 4G is no longer being rolled out in my area anytime soon, I swapped the S3 for a iPhone 4.

I love Apple, all have done, probably always will do.

I love the UI and usability especially when jailbroken.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

After using a friends S3 I found the OS laggy and difficult and the size of the screen was too big for me (doesn't fit where I keep my iPhone in the car) so I will most probably be going for the iPhone 5 replacement.

Thanks again :)

There were lots of things that really sold me when I made the switch over to Apple!
Simple things like importing photos to your computer, putting music into it, apps, iCloud, Sync, Siri and compatibility with stuff like docks and my car.

Yeah, there's stuff I miss from being on Android, like the Widgets and the open-source everything, but things I really don't miss like the troublesome method of getting photos out of your phone, and the monthly hard resets I was doing because the software always glitched itself!

Go Apple, it's worth it. My experience with the androids is once the manufacturer moves on to a new handset, they almost seem to drop support for the older ones.

I'm kinda frustrated with having to use iTunes to sync everything on my ipad and even then I can't just drag and drop photos onto it. I have to specify a folder to keep synced. I might try android for my next tablet. Also the amount that apple charges for memory is crazy. With some androids you can use a SD or microSD card for more storage. That's just what I've heard. I haven't actually been able to play with one yet.

***I have gone from Apple to Android about 8 months ago. I got a Galaxy S3, and I'm very happy :)

I like the idea of having my back up done, and uploading it straight onto the new phone with Apple, and there are a few things I'm worried about going to Android:

What is compatibility like? My home stereo has iPod connectivity, plus I have an iPod dock.

***The lightning connector of the Iphone5, 5s, and any android device connector will render the 30-pin dock connector useless. 3.5mm auxiliary jacks are universal for stereo purposes.

My car has Bluetooth music streaming for iPhone (might for for Android? Idk).

***How does that work exactly?

Everything caters for Apple, do you have the same support for Android/Samsung?

***What do you mean by catering?

At the same point, the different charging point means an adapter needs to be used for my dock and stereo which may be just as bad.

***Your stereo and dock will most likely have a 3.5mm auxiliary jack just like for headphones. Any device with the jack can play music to your stereo.

I use it as an iPod as well, obviously the iPhone wins over Android here. How's the music player on the Samsung?

***Google Play Music is the service for Android. It is just as good as Apple's Music Player. Although it doesn't have airport srtreaming support, it does have a 5-band manual equilizer and with the syncing service, you can stream and save music from your account if it's not on your device. I find it very convenient and very well done.
There are a LOT of different music player apps on the Android Market. I personally use an app called Poweramp. I listen to music with my Ultrasone Hfi-580 stereo headphones. It has a GREAT UI, and a sweet 10-band manual EQ. It doesn't stream, so your music needs to be on your device. (I have about 10 gigs of music I put on a MicroSD card that I stick inside, not a problem. :) )

How difficult to use is the Android OS?
***People keep saying Android ui sucks, but I believe it's a lot better than IOS.
Contrary to popular belief, Android runs actually pretty smooth. The latest versions of android (4.1 and 4.2) run beautifully, and they just feel right when in your hands. Round yet powerful.
Android is a lot more customizable. It implements Widgets (similar to Apple's Dashboard on Macs) directly on the home screen along with apps and such.
I like to think of android as a simple computer os, like a Mac or a Linux computer.
Other than that, ios and android give almost exactly the same experience for the user. I picked up a Galaxy Nexus phone (4.1 jellybean, coming from ios) and within 20 minutes, i was very pleased. It worked great for everything. I tried games, and texting, and watching videos, and reading, music, etc, and I was very happy.

What is the storage like for Samsungs?
***Standard 16 or 32 gig. Depends on the specific phone. (I got 16gigs)
I use a 32gig MicroSD card. (So in total I have 48 gigs.)

So has anyone done the change? Is it a PITA?

***I did the change! I'm happeeeeee! :) :D

What's PITA?

I use a class 10, 32gig microsd to store 10 gigs of music for my Galaxy S3. It works perfectly for me. It was easy to set up too.
-put the card in your phone, in settings>storage>tap format SD-Card.
-once it's done, take it out and put it into your computer.
-(for a mac) open your iTunes library in finder, and drag and drop the folders/albums you want.
-put it back into your phone
-done

I switched from ANDROID to APPLE.
Apple- everything is much worse, ITunes is dumb.
Android- GREAT! Google Play is much better.
I hate being unspecific, but that's all Ill say here.

Alright, I made the switch from derpfone to apple and I'm happy with that. I love apple products, and while I cannot speak on behalf of android, I know that my mother has had androids and disliked them in the past. That's all the help I can give.

Forget iPhone to Android. I haven't even made the change from non-iPhone to iPhone yet. I was hoping that change would come sooner than later, but evidently it is not.

Thanks for your help mrchalkteeth. That is a lot of helpful information.

***The lightning connector of the Iphone5, 5s, and any android device connector will render the 30-pin dock connector useless. 3.5mm auxiliary jacks are universal for stereo purposes.

What is involved in the swap though? If I go to an iPhone 5S or whatever it will be called, I will just upload my new back up. Do I need to go through everything again?

My car has Bluetooth music streaming for iPhone (might for for Android? Idk).

***How does that work exactly?

I have a head unit which connects to my phone's Bluetooth which streams my music into the head unit and that comes out of my system. I need to go through the paperwork, but I remember it said it was iPhone/Apple compatible, but nothing about Samsung?
I hate using cables, so the Bluetooth streaming is a must.

Everything caters for Apple, do you have the same support for Android/Samsung?

***What do you mean by catering?

Accessories, audio systems, it just seems to me that the accessory base is bigger than Samsung. Will it change?

I use it as an iPod as well, obviously the iPhone wins over Android here. How's the music player on the Samsung?

***Google Play Music is the service for Android. It is just as good as Apple's Music Player. (I have about 10 gigs of music I put on a MicroSD card that I stick inside, not a problem. :) )

Another issue I was worry about with music, apart from my car audio, is my headphones. I have an amplifier which leaves my music player (my iPhone) which the speakers than plug into. The sound quality is greatly upgraded because of this. I am not sure if the music players on the Samsung will allow the amplifier to work.

***People keep saying Android ui sucks, but I believe it's a lot better than IOS.

I've only ever used friends S3's. It may have been because I wasn't used to using it, but I found it somewhat laggy and slow. Is it possible that the issue was with me?

What is the storage like for Samsungs?
***Standard 16 or 32 gig. Depends on the specific phone. (I got 16gigs)
I use a 32gig MicroSD card. (So in total I have 48 gigs.)

That is definitely a benefit over the iPhone. I have almost filled by 32GB.

What's PITA?

Pain in the ass, haha.

Thanks to all for the replies. Due to a lot of my musical equipment being Apple compatible, I am still thinking of just getting the new iPhone because it is easier. Not that the S4 doesn't look like an awesome phone. Also, I don't know how well Samsungs stand up to time. My iPhones have always been built well and cop a hiding, I've never had any issues.

Sorry to start an Android vs iOS fight, I was just curious to see what would be involved swapping from iOS to Android (I've gotten content with bringing the phone home, charging it, uploading a backup and being done with it).
I think some people need to admit a phone is a phone, in my opinion Samsung make a good phone and Apple make a good phone. They each appeal to different individuals for different reasons. It is as simple as that.

I have had the chance to use IPhones for some time and I have A LOT of experience on the Android OS and i still love Android for its open source and flexibility. BUT i must say its hard to say which is better because one is an OS and one is a phone. basically if you want to keep it simple and clean go with Iphone but if you want sheer power, personalization, and speed Android or S4 or S3 will always win.
Also i have an HTC One X

I used to have an iPhone 4 until I switched to a Galaxy S III about 3 months ago. That is one of the best changes of technology I have ever made, as I love android and samsung and the Galaxy S III. I would strongly recommend switching.
Yes streaming does work for android too as they both use bluetooth.
And yes either way your 30 pin docking items would be useless either way unless you wanted to use an adapter (Yuck)
I don't love googles play music player, but Samsung's is amazing and beats out the iphone hands down. (I have used both)
Android is not "difficult" at all to use, not to say it is easy because it is meant to have more customization but you would not have any trouble using it.
The storage is basically the same you can get integrated storage and buy more of it. But that is a waste since you can put a 32gb external card in for cheap and get lots more storage if you need it.
I have made the change, and I love it and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new phone. Android is just so much more advanced and feature rich than iOS and I love that.

I had an iPod Touch 4 for a few years until I realised that Android was so much more customizable. So I got an Android tablet alongside my iPod Touch, I then ditched the iPod touch and got an Android Phone as well.

iPod touch uses iOS like the iPhone and all you can do us jailbreak and yet people question whether it is legal or not yet on Android, people don't give a dam if you mod it how you want. I mean just look at http://forum.xda-developers.com

The android devices I have is:
HTC One X (Tegra 3)
Motorola Xoom Wifi

I haven't switched phones but I did from a touch to a nexus 7. I have to say that android is much smoother and gives more options, but since you have an iPhone stick with it because otherwise all the things you bought were for nothing.

I went from an iPhone 4 to an LG Optimus M 2 years ago.
I did like iOS, but when I bought an Android, I became more into tech and such and realized how the options of customization are endless.
Prior to the iPhone 4, I had an iPhone 3GS, an HTC HD7 (windows phone), a BB 8520 and a lot of sidekicks.

Android history:
LG Optimus M
Samsung Admire
LG Motion 4G (current)
Samsung GS3 or GS4 (goal)
