The fourth Gears of War game, Judgment is looking to bring new quirks to a familiar formula, writes Tom Hoggins.
It’s fitting that the last major exclusive for the Xbox 360 looks likely to be a Gears of War title. While Halo’s Master Chief has always been Microsoft’s flag-bearing poster boy, Marcus Fenix and his beefy cohorts arrival a year into the 360’s lifespan defined the console. Big, bold and exciting, Gears popularised the bombastic third-person cover shooter that has become the staple of a generation.
Many have tried to mimic it, but nothing has ever truly captured the ferocity and sheer weight that Gears communicates. It will surprise no-one that --while Marcus Fenix himself might be absent-- the Gears boisterousness is present and correct in Judgment, all rattling gunfire, whirring chainsaws and alien enemies exploding into bloody giblets. This is Gears of War, and there’s no chance of mistaking it for anything else.
