My school is hosting a basketball tournament tomorrow and I volunteered to attend the concession stand. I'll be with a partner and I really like the other kid who volunteered. He's a nice guy and we've talked before, but our shift is 2 and a half hours long so pretty much we get to sit around together for two and a half hours. I want to make the most of it, so I wonder if anyone has any ideas for things we could talk about? I don't want to end up sitting around in an awkward silence for two and a half hours.

You can literally talk about anything in the entire world. Start off with small talk, you know, whether, sport, games, friends, school, work whatever. As the day progresses you will learn more about each other and be able to tailor your conversations to your interests. Like if you both like a same game, talk about that, if you have similar problems with friends, talk about that, if you both like dead baby jokes, make those. You'll also have opportunities to talk about things in your environment around you, how people look, how they act, if you know them, facts about them, what they're wearing, etc etc etc. So many things. Just keep your mind open. Bring up even the smallest things you think of because it could spark a long conversation.
For example:
- A boy comes up to you, he's drenched in sweat and stinks -
You could state the obvious and say he stunk.
Your partner might say that he hates the smell of sweat.
You agree, and say something else you hate.
He agrees or disagrees and eventually you're having a conversation about pet peeves.
Good luck. :)

Two things to remember when starting a conversation. Use humor and talk about your surroundings. Jokes are a great way to get on anybody's good side. I'm not talking knock knock jokes but joke about stuff going on around you. I'm not the best to explain this because I have no problem starting conversations with people. Like I said talk about surroundings(You'll be at a basketball game, there should be plenty to talk about) and use humor.

Thanks for the replies you two. We didn't get to talk as much as I hoped we would since he had to leave after only an hour. He started doing his math homework at the beginning and read a book the rest of the time, so we didn't talk much during that hour. I tried doing that thing where you put a coin under a piece of paper and shade over it with a pencil to make an impression of the coin, since we had lots of coins available.
After he left another student took his place who I had gone to elementary school with. I didn't know him as well and was a little nervous about talking, but we got off just fine after a while. We watched part of an episode of My Name is Earl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Name_Is_Earl) on Netflix and we talked about that a bit, but my laptop died before we finished it.
We joked a bit about all the people who asked us what the prices were even though there were on a huge sign behind us. Then we joked about selling the coin sketches I had made earlier for $25,000 to make extra money :lol3:.
All in all, it was nice talking to him again since we hadn't talked since elementary school four years ago. I'm really glad things went as well as they did.
