I know that one of the 10 commandments is that "thou shalt not commit adultery". I read some places that masturbation is included. If I'm not married, I don't have a girlfriend, or anything like that, would it be against that commandment?

I'd say no, it's not. Masturbation is basically a part of human nature, as sexual release is a basic human need and instinct.

i agree. in fact i think the only possible way for masturbation to be considered to be a sin would be if you masturbate to a married or "commited" person.

Everyone interprets the Bible differently. When it all comes down to it, you and you alone can decide what's right and wrong. That's what I've come to discover in the world of religion, anyway.

The Bible never specifically says ANYTHING at all about masturbation. None. Nada. We know that people must've masturbated at that time (heck even the monkeys do it... whenever the little kids go by at the zoo :D). They might have actually been more open about masturbation then we are today! They could've thought that masturbation was such a normal part of life (like a women's period) that they neglected to put anything into the Bible about it. And if the Bible was written by God "through these people" HE could have very well told them to write down "masturbation is BAD". So.... there you go :D

I suppose eevryone has to determine for themselves what's ok, and this 'masturbation is sinful' question comes up frequently, so you're not alone.

What I've found, though, is that it comes up most with guys (eventhough girls masturbate, too), and it comes up with younger guys who are just discovering masturbation. I think as you get more comfortable with puberty and all that's changing in your body, you'll come to accept those urges as normal and natural.

Everyone masturbates, it's a normal activity. And although you have to decide for yourself what's 'moral', you might also ask yourself if you really believe that God would basically torment children with urges and feelings that were 'sinful'.

It is not against that commandment.
Depending on your interpretation of the Bible though, it is something bad though.
There is something to do with something and it phrases it in a way that could be intrepreted as:
1) masturbating
2) pulling out before ejaculation

You're referring to the story of Onan. Long story short he was supposed to get his dead brother's wife pregnant (it was a weird law back then). Anyway he had sex with her but "pulled out" before orgasm because he didn't want to go through with it. Then God literally killed him on the spot for disobeying him. So he REALLY was in trouble for pulling out, NOT FOR MASTURBATING. If that was the case, God would have killed EVERYONE by now! :D

So bottom line the Bible says NOTHING SPECIFIC about masturbation ANYWHERE. I personally think that it is totally natural, but you have to take it up with yourself (and what you think is right).

No, it can't be interpreted any other way than that he didn't "cum inside of her". It specifically says that they were having sex, but instead of spilling his seed in her, he did it upon the ground (not LATER, as in a masturbation session, but RIGHT THERE as he was SUPPOSED to get her pregnant).

this seems like an interesting debate but its not really answering the original question. if you guys would like to continue debating this please do so in ramblings of the wise. lets get back to the original question here folks. thanks.

Well since the original question was if the ten commandments said anything about masturbation; well... no. Masturbation is not directly mentioned, and the commandment regarding adultery is open to thousands of different interpretations, so it really comes down to what you personally believe.
