What would have to be replaced? The battery itself?

It should be the battery. Take it to apple tomorrow and have them look at it.

I have no idea, but the people at an Apple store do.

I'm planning on fixing it myself. But I don't know the parts needed to fix it. The iPod won't charge.

The iPod has a dead battery, after many charges the life of it has depleted. You could replace the battery but it is quite a fiddly task, as you would have to go through the internals until you reach the battery which is located at the back of the device, under the metal casing. I would get Apple to fix it for you, or buy the part and get a third party to work on it, because if you mess up, the iPod is pretty much screwed.

I know that you want to fix it yourself, but the apple store will help you so much, weather if they just tell you the problem and not fix it so you can do it at home.
