I don't know if this is possible in the vBulletin software, and this has probably been asked before, but I'll ask again. In order to prevent bumping old threads after the 2 or 3 month window has passed, why can't the threads automatically lock themselves?

Because OPs can bump their own threads. Also, even if there's a mod that can do it, it has to be ensured that it can be disabled in diaries or the arcade
