LG has unveiled a new 5.5” phone that aims to challenge the Samsung Galaxy Note in the market for new, larger handsets.

The Optimus G features a 5.5” screen and was one of four Optimus series devices – the G, Vu:, F and LII – that LG revealed at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Although Motorla currently claims to be the largest 4G manufacturer in the world, LG has an initial target to sell 10 million smartphones each quarter and double sales of its LTE devices in 2013. The company said that “flagship models from the G and Vu: series will target the premium segment while the F and L series will be positioned as more mass audience smartphones for 4G LTE and the 3G markets, respectively”.
The Optimus G is the first smartphone to use Qualcomm’s more powerful Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad-Core processor, while LG has also upgraded its displays and its interface enhancements. The Vu offers a 4:3 aspect ratio for media viewing, while the F is a lower price 4G phone and the LII is a 3G device aimed at the more affordable markets, and features and LED light-enhanced home button.
Analysts at CCS Insight said LG was still “working hard” to remain competitive at the high end of the market and aiming the follow up the success of its Nexus device, made with Google. The cheaper devices are a response to pressure from Chinese manufacturers.
Also at MWC, Asus announced the Padfone 2, which combines a phone with an Intel chip with a second screen which plugs into the phone to act as both a charger and a larger display.

Some of these smart phones are getting ridiculous. How the hell will a 5.5" phone fit into my pocket?

What next, will we have full sized iPad sized phones?

I don't see much point in phablets, it looks quite strange seeing a massive device held to your ear when taking a phone call.

This is indeed a rival of the Galaxy Note II, it has a 400PPI density, which is actually pretty amazing, much phone has 328PPI and it seems pretty clear enough. The design looks remarkably similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note II, along with the very long home button, henceforth I won't be surprised if there is a lawsuit coming along. Recently I have noticed a lot of LG android devices get their ideas from Samsung and Motorola, but most people are too occupied with the Apple vs. Samsung debate that's going, so it goes unnoticed.

Seems as if we're reversing the evolution of phones, at first they were like big blocks, then they got small. Now they're getting big again o_O
