So I was originally going to get a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban but I just recently realized the horrid gas mileage that the 5.7 litre Vortec delivers... I am looking for an SUV that gets good gas mileage that I could get for under 6 grand. ANy help, guys?

Any real SUV is going to get horrible gas mileage. You could get a small SUV like a Honda CRV or a Toyota RAV4 for less than that, and it would probably get low to mid 20's miles per gallon.
Any SUV from the 90's/early 2000s that has a V6 or a V8 is going to absolutely guzzle gas, simply because they didn't have to design them to be really fuel efficient considering how cheap gas was.

I agree with jack, but also will add two honda's
2003 Honda Pilot (15/21MPG) 3.7l V6 J engine
2003 Honda Element (18/24MPG) 2.4l 4-inline K engine
Both are a little under 5900 in good condition.
2000 Chevrolet tracker 4WD Hardtop(21/24MPG) 2.0l Engine runs for 4500 in good condition.
You can check vehicles EPA tags on fueleconomy website, google it.

Last time I looked a 5.7 vortec gets great mileage, then again I'm used to these engines in my trucks that get 8 mpg. So maybe to you it's bad but it'd be great for me.
Anyways, the topic. There is no actual full size SUV that gets good mileage unless its small and has a v6. But in my book that's not truly an SUV

You could try and look for a Land Rover / Range Rover diesel, or a VW Touareg. I doubt you're going to find anything decent within your price range though. I know for a fact that the VWs are capable of mid 20s with pretty serious grunt.
Any American-built SUV: cheap, old and efficient simply don't fit in one sentence.
I hardly consider a CRV or Rav-4 an SUV. More like a plastic-clad hatchback on stilts

Yeah, I'll probably end up getting a Honda Pilot or something...

Bro, get a jeep! The old Cherokee's not too bad on gas, i think my friends gets like 15-20, reliable (if you get the right year) and the 4x4 will go ALMOST (obvious exceptions) anywhere.

I second this! I wanted to get a 1999-2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee as my first car, but they were too expensive for my price range.
My friend had a Chevy Blazer with a 4.3L V6 (I think) and it does pretty well on gas...
Good luck with your decision!

I had a 2003 4-Runner that got about 22 mpg. The Honda Element or Pilot are also both solid choices, but good luck actually getting one or $6,000, just because bluebook is that means nothing about what they sell for. A decent Element should set you back over $10,000, or maybe that's just around here...

I currently drive a 2007 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 Series, that was used by my mom before. We bought it new and it's currently at 178k miles and we have had no major issue ever.
If you can find an older Land Cruiser 70 series, that is one of the best SUVs ever made. They're from the 80s-90s, however, the same model from 1984 is still being made new

I'd check Cregslist for Cherokee's. I keep finding them for like 2 grand. (Minneapolis, Minnesota craigslist)
