Nither as Poltricks is controlig ethier way...but It "suppossed" to be a Republic as... Democracy is not freedom as the the 49% lose thier freedom from the 51%.A Republic is supposed to proctect the individual from the majority.

Why are they separate ideas? We are a democracy in the sense that we elect our leaders. Are we a pure democracy? No. We don't have everyday citizens take their turn at governing etc. as the Greeks did. We are a republic as in we elect our leaders to do the work for us.
We are a democratic republic. Why aren't those two compatible?

I don't really know what there is to debate about the subject since it's an objective fact that the US is democratic republic. We're taught in grade school that we are a democracy because younger kids can't really comprehend politics and explaining the meaning of a democratic republic would be fruitless. In a pure democracy, every citizen votes on every issue, bill, law, etc. In a republic there are democratically elected representatives to fill seats in the government and come to conclusions on most things amongst themselves. We elect these officials using democratic principals -- they do most of the work for us -- but there are still certain things that citizens vote on, like town ordinances, while legal statutes would be handled by the government. Ergo, democratic republic.
