What are the criteria to earn a seat at prestigious universities worldwide, apart from excellent grades.

In the US, it is moving toward grades, and sats. Extracurricular activities are good. Volunteer work is always good
Do a project or something that makes you stand out, sets you apart from the masses

Grades, SATs, ACTs (sometime), and money. Extra-curriculars help, but aren't looked at nearly as heavily.
