I'm looking into my first car right now, I've made a list of cars I want.
Of course, this has made my mother show concern. She wants me to a safe car, and made it a point I should not get a Sports or Muscle Car.
I see this a lot from parents.

So, my questions for VT, is:
Do you think it's a good or bad idea for a teen/young driver to have a Sports or Muscle car?
What about Sporty or Compact?
Do you think that having one would teach responsibility, or be asking for trouble?

No, I don't believe having a fast car would teach responsibility. That's not necessarily an argument against having a fun car, it's just the absence of an argument for one. It might even be asking for trouble, but I wouldn't really say with certainty.

There are really two main arguments against giving a teenager a sports car or muscle car:
1. The insurance and upkeep is truly obscene.
2. If you screw up, you get screwed up. They're truly just not as safe as SUVs or large sedans. What's more, if you can drive an SUV or a pickup, you can drive anything. I'm of the opinion that you should spend at least a couple years in an SUV before graduating to a fast, fun car.

I think having a crappy jap import is best for a first car.
They are cheap to fix
And you can bang it up with your inexperience as much as you like

Having a sports car as a teenager costs tons in insurance, and parents are probably worried because sports cars aren't the safest. They're built for speed, speed comes first. Safety second.

I am a believer that a person's first car should be used, in decent condition, sturdy, but NOT "nice". They don't really know how to take care of it properly. It doesn't have to be a shit hole, but it should not be worth much because chances are they will do something study, live inside it during sport seasons or what not, and get into all other types of shenanigans. Did me well. I treat my nicer, not super nice, but nicer car now like a set of china.

If you want a cool, fun car, get a Jag XJ8 convertible... like a '90. They're pretty sturdy; put in a roll bar and you'll be set.

xD
I like my tiny imports. I know what car I'm getting.
I wanted to see Teens view on the topic, as I also know several people who got Camaros, Mustangs, Eclipses as their first cars.

In my opinion, if a young kid gets a really nice car like a Mercedes or BMW, then they will grow up believing that regular cars, like Hondas and Toyotas are peices of crap when they're not. That's for like 16 year olds though. I mean you're 18. I think if you got a sports car it would give you responsability versus getting a used truck or something.

Seeing as this isn't really a debate, I'll move it to the appropriate section. If it turns into one though, I'll put it back. :P

I was expecting more people to argue for it. xD Wasn't expecting everyone against it.

It depends on the type of person really.
Ask yourself honestly, are you the type of person who may be inclined to mess around a bit in a car?

I've got a four door sedan, however it has a boxer 6 cylinder with a 6 speed transmission, one of the most powerful we can get here (power limits), and to be completely honest, it is enough to get me in a LOT of trouble.
However, it has a 5 star safety rating (over here we have ANCAP) which also makes it extremely safe,

What I'm trying to say is, you don't need a small sports car for you car to be fast. Just because your car is fast, doesn't mean it isn't safe.

Possibly compromise with your parents, and get a pickup or sedan, but get a sporty model.
