I'm looking for a rational or psychological explanation of why self-harm is so bad.

Not risk of infection, not risk of bleeding out, or scars, NOT physical factors.

And not social factors like it hurts your family or friends, people might not accept it, you'll have trouble getting a job with big scars etc.

I want a real reason why self-harming is so bad for the individual who does it.

I'm in no way encouraging self-harm.

So, what makes self-harm so bad?

It's not. Why do you think people do it? It's so helpful to my mind that it's pretty much one of the very few things that has kept me from suicide. Self harm is a great psychological thing, well except for the fact that you can get addicted to it. The physical and social aspects also cause you to think of yourself as ugly, which can cause you to be unhealthy mentally. I'm not condoning self harm either, but psychologically speaking it's a good and healthy way to get rid of stress. Physically and socially, it's not. That's what makes it bad. It will hurt your body, and it can hurt your social life. How it hurts your social life can also affect your mental health however. It is a bad thing though, do not do it whoever is reading this. I want that clear, it's not a good thing. It does hurt you and others.
