NSW Health Minister Reba Meagher has condemned a Canberra high school for allowing a 16-year-old student to take smoke breaks between classes.

Tara Lewis has been granted permission by teachers at Stromlo High School, in the ACT, to take "smokos" because her doctor said she was clinically addicted to nicotine, News Limited reported.

Ms Meagher said that after hearing about the incident, she spoke with the NSW education department to make sure it was not happening in her jurisdiction.

"I've spoken with the minister for education's office this morning and it's certainly not policy in NSW," she told reporters in Sydney.

"I don't think anybody should be smoking and they most certainly should not be smoking in school grounds."

What kind of an excuse is that: "Clinically addicted to nicotine."
