Lately I've been noticing a lot of new members violating some simple rules that will get them infractions like how to do (enter sexual activity here). Would it be okay for me to lend a helping hand and tell them that they'll get in trouble if they don't fix it? A perfect example is just a few minutes ago a brand new member was asking how to as his friend to jack off with him. I almost told him to fix it, but then worried that I might be breaking the rules by doing that. WHat do you think?

It's probably best to use the report function, as I found out.

I would just report it, let the mods deal with it. Better that then get in trouble for back seat moderating, I think.

See I always thought that was for incorrect placement.

It's not only for incorrect placement :)

Note: This should ONLY be used to report violations (spam, advertising, explicit content, fighting, etc.) or incorrect placement.

I believe violations would also include rule breaking

No, you shouldn't do that. As you probably know, it's known as backseat moderating. While it seems helpful (and I'll admit, I used to do it :P) in reality it usually isn't. Most new members probably won't listen to other users, simply because they don't want to be told what to do. It's best to just report it and say something like "not allowed" and a moderator will take it from there. If you post and say something like "this is not allowed" then a moderator will just have to restate and lock it, which would be repetitive but counterproductive since regular users cannot lock and move threads.
All users, from the time they register, are supposed to know and understand the forum rules, so even if they're new, they should have read the posting guidelines.

But to conclude, just report the post, even if you're not sure. You can report a post for any reason you think it breaks the rules, not just what's listed there.
