In my school I have to bring a laptop every day. What's a good idea (cheap, durable and long-lasting)? Tell me the price and please convert to HKD (I live in HK). And no MacBooks or HPs.

I don't exactly know what 'cheap' is for you... It could be $1555, it also could be $6000.

I'm assuming somewhere in the middle, $4000 sound ok? Lol.
Alright so if you are lugging this thing around all day you want it portable, nothing more than a 15" I'm guessing, and obviously you want it light.

Ultrabooks! They are very portable, light and durable? I have no idea, you gotta read the reviews.

This is $5445, but if you can afford it... it's killer. Asus, probably the best brand out there for motherboards and they are my #1 choice.

.. if you cannot afford that,

^ that one is $3889

If you aren't a huge ultrabook kinda guy, there are alternatives like the standard netbooks.

But, how can you turn down a sexy, sleek ultrabook? :D

Note - to those reading this and the outrageous and incorrect prices, they are converted over to HKD

Those sound pretty good. Pretty much anything that comes with Windows 8 means is gonna be pretty good and have a good performance too (plus newer hardware).

If you want to wait a little bit, the Microsoft Surface Pro is coming out on February 9, and with it some other Tablet/Laptop Hybrids like it. It has pretty good hardware for its price.

I would say this one here has an amazing price for the hardware and software it packs:

Get a Toshiba Satellite. They range from $400 to $800.

A large MacBook Pro with retina display and max HD is $4000 CAD, which is $31,115 HKD. I love converting currencies and looking at the exorbitant numbers.

Overpriced?
Ain't nobody got time to argue with dat

Looked at Lenovo or Samsung? You aren't going to need much for basic, general schoolwork besides durability and reliability. Something nice and light, even a Dell XPS13 would do you really good. Something within the vicinity of 13-15", an i3 or i5 processor. If you do media-intensive work, opt for at least 8GB of RAM and a dedicated graphics chip.

Or even the chromebook! Google docs works well I find.

Dell? Don't get me started...

It's not like they explode that often or something right? :yeah:

I would avoid chromebooks like the plague... google docs is probably the worst office applications out there.

The just released Surface Pro is about $7000 HKD for the 64 GB model, and $7800 HKD for the 128 GB model. A tablet that is also a full-featured PC, not a bad deal at all for that money.

If not, the ASUS ultrabooks that blueeyes mentioned are a pretty good option too. If you need Microsoft Office, if you can prove your student status you can buy the 365 Student edition (which is $620 HKD for 4 years and includes an additional 20 GB of Skydrive space, 60 minutes per month of Skype and access to pretty much everything Office on 2 PCs or Macs and some mobile devices, as well as the online version of the apps). If not, the normal version (Microsoft Office 2013 Home Premium) is around $1000 HKD.

That was a small batch of them many years ago. Although I have a Dell laptop and some times I joke "I hope this isn't one of the exploding ones."

Regardless of what you said, I'm going to recommend HP. Very dependable. Get rid of the crap-ware when you get it and it's a golden laptop. Very good for various uses.

Small batch lol. I'm pretty sure Dell's exploding issues is half the problem.

What will you be doing with it?
Chromebooks are great if all you need is internet.
They are also really inexpensive.

$$$$

Ultrabooks is your best bet if you don't mind paying a little extra for more then a Chromebook. (eg, an actual OS and it being Windows).

Chromebooks are great! $250 an you basically get a internet browser :/

So, if you are familiar with Google Docs... go for it!!

He doesn't want one, though.

Well, if it's just going to be for school (you know, word processing, Powerpoint, maaaybe video and photo editing), go for ASUS. They make decently good and powerful computers that are relatively cheap (starting from $350). Happy searching!

If you get a Small Business Dell, they aren't as bad! Just call 'em up and order one. Better support, they look nicer (in my opinion), and don't come with that crapware.

A HP anything like that or maybe invest in a new mac. Ussually now a days public schools issue that equipment. I go to a small HS with a total of over 300 students and they issue us our own Ipads, and its not because of the size its were they use the money the state gives them

While that may be true, I just don't like them as a company. I'll stick with IBM/Lenovo if anyone asks my advice on small business purchases.
