Tennessee’s so-called ‘Don’t Say Gay‘ bill died with the adjournment of the state assembly last year. But now the measure is back — with new, harsher requirements.
The bill, SB 234, still bars Tennessee teachers from discussing any facet of “non-heterosexual” sexuality with children in grades K-8. But the newest iteration also includes a provision requiring teachers or counselors to inform the parents of some students who identify themselves as LGBT. State Sen. Stacey Campfield (R), who authored the bill the first time around and again introduced it this time, calls out students who might be “at risk,” but leaves the interpretation of that behavior to the teacher:
The general assembly recognizes that certain subjects are particularly sensitive and are, therefore, best explained and discussed within the home. Because of its complex societal, scientific, psychological, and historical implications, human sexuality is one such subject. Human sexuality is best understood by children with sufficient maturity to grasp its complexity and implications [...]
A school counselor, nurse, principal or assistant principal from counseling a student who is engaging in, or who may be at risk of engaging in, behavior injurious to the physical or mental health and well-being of the student or another person; provided, that wherever possible such counseling shall be done in consultation with the student’s parents or legal guardians. Parents or legal guardians of students who receive such counseling shall be notified as soon as practicable that such counseling has occurred
Family rejection is a serious risk for LGBT youth. Kids who are LGBT often face alienation, if not outright abandonment, because they come out. Forty percent of homeless youth are LGBT, and many of them report that the reason they left home was to escape an environment hostile to their sexual orientation. LGBT youth who experience family rejection are at high risk for depression and suicide.
Tennessee hates homosexual dogs AND homosexual kids.

If a kid is LGBT, they should have the right to tell people when they damn well please. Tennessee is a crazy state. Go CT!

I really don't understand why some people think being gay is bad... If you don't like gays fine then but how does my being gay affect your life? If I want to express my sexuality than I will... but if you refuse me of that then I would expect you not be able to say your religion or nationality... if you want to try to stop a group from expressing themselves than that goes for every other form of expression...

For a second, I thought it was a bill that made it unlawful to use the word "gay" in place of the word "dumb" or whatever. As Freddie Mercury would say:

I've seen this all over Tumblr, there are petitions against is with thousands of signatures. It's absolutely outrageous. Being gay isn't breaking the rules or causing the person or other harm so there is absolutely no reason to out kids against their will.

Tennessee sounds like a fascist dictatorship. Or an Islamic one. It's totally vicious to have laws that demand a teacher to "out" a teen just because he might sound or act a bit gay sometimes. In many cases "being gay" is just a passing phase some teens go through. And laws like that will destroy a young life, based on a lie.

This is kinda like what happened when the Communists took over Russian in the early 20th century.

Laws where passed to encourage people to spy on others and turn them in as well.

Only now it's the teaches spying on the kids and turning them into their parents for possible being GBLT!

"A school counselor, nurse, principal or assistant principal from counseling a student who is engaging in, or who may be at risk of engaging in, behavior injurious to the physical or mental health and well-being of the student or another person; provided, that wherever possible such counseling shall be done in consultation with the student’s parents or legal guardians. Parents or legal guardians of students who receive such counseling shall be notified as soon as practicable that such counseling has occurred"

In short this can be translated as We can violate the laws inacted in the 1970's to convince you that you are actually straight!

Nice going Tennessee, thumb your nose at the law,and violate peoples civil and hiuman rights at the same time.

Wooo i'm glad I live in Louisiana !

Guys there snothing wrong with the south In general,it's just a few idiots have escaped their cages.

I'm just wondering do you think it's thta much better up north or out west?

You'll just run into clones of these fools where ever you go.

They are a problem and as the old saying goes (slightly updated here):

"You can't run from your problems because the faster that you run from them the sooner they'll catch you and regulate you into nothing with stupid laws"

Same here. Where I live it isn't as terrible, but I still live with some of those people. Hell, some of my friends are homophobic, but it's a topic we try not to discuss because it usually leads to a disagreement.
