I'm in Uni and something I'm hearing very often is that employers are now seeking employee's who can public speak, liaise with the public, and are great with teamwork. Apparently businesses and industries are finding that a degree just isn't enough anymore, even if they are good at the actual work they do e.g. good mathematical skills.
This is kind of getting me down. It just seems that the only way to get by in the world now is to be a people person, no matter what you work as.
I am not a people person. Sure, I like being around people and I can give presentations without any major freak outs (usually), but I am not social nor do I have conversational skills. An example of this is one time I had to get my class to fundraise, and I thought I knew what I was doing but as soon as I stood up in front of people I realized I didn't know what I was doing and it ended up like "Err I've been asked to get you guys to fundraise because............... um..... yeah....". Also, in college it seems like everyone is friends with each other, but I'm not. I could be with my lab group and I just feel totally left out. Like, I usually end up standing or sitting on my own where as everyone else is in this huge group and each of them have like 50 friends. I'm terrible with team work basically.
I feel like this is going to hold me back no matter what I do... should I accept this is how I am, or should I try and work on these (I have tried already and I think now I'm as good as I'm going to get, but still bad) ? Does anyone else feel like this?
