Ok.....my next door neighbor has a wifi (wep) setup. She doesnt know the password or code since her service set ot up for her and didnt give her the code. (actually....she just doesnt remember it.) She said i could use it if i can get in.
There is nothing on the box, (we looked) and company wants $60 for a servive call to find it. Usual default was reset.
Are there any programs that will decode the password/code that are free and actually work?

that's funny cause when they set up the modem it the like 25 digit number on the back a factory code long code to . But it can also be on the back of the main cable box to . and it has to be hooked up to a main computer pic . After the cable company sets it up you can Chang it but you need the pass code to so that to . I must look into this more ill be back !

Huh?
Is this a modem/router combination unit? If your neighbor lost the wifi password, she can just connect a computer to the device with a networking cable, enter the its IP address in her browser, and change the password. If she lost the password that protects the configuration menu itself, she can try pressing the reset button on the back with a pen or paperclip. If there's no button, she'll have to pay for the service call.

you beat me to it very good one . I'm not sure what he has if it a separate router ( linksys) or another type he can that is separate from the cable company he can call them to change it . But we don't no what he's got yet .
if you call linksys they should fix you up in no time .

for a long time it was set up as the default. after a power failure it had to be reset and it now shows up as a name and it requires a passcode. I don't want to hit the reset button because I don't want to screw anything up.....
I heard there are programs that you can run on the wifi signal (with the owners permission) that will show the password of the encripted network. I guess that's what I'm looking for.
if that doesn't work I guess I'll have to spring for the money..........

Please try to be as specific as possible here... do you mean you are connected through a cable and the configuration menu is asking you for a username and a password? If so, cracking the wifi password will not get you in, and even though it might let you use the internet you will eventually need to change the settings.
The password cracking program you want is called Aircrack-ng. However, I strongly suggest resetting the modem-router (I'm assuming they're the same device) since not only will cracking the password not let you into the menu, but the process is fairly involved and you need a wireless adapter which supports promiscuous mode. You can Google Aircrack-ng and read up on it, and you will quickly find it it easier to push the little button on the back with a paperclip instead.
