We've been told that desktops are in superior decline recently and that everyone is buying laptops... But I don't think they are extinct quite yet.
In my opinion, I expect them to become more like a big hub for all your gadgets.
A simple device where you can just place all your phones and tablets on top of it and work of your desktop at home (we all prefer working off desktops than laptops) and then when you leave the house, your data would be saved onto your tablets and phones ready to be worked on the move (Or even, your data could be saved in the cloud!). I think this is very much possible, especially with the Microsoft surface which works exactly like a desktop.

Yeah everyone could go the tablet, but I still dont think it will make the desktop market go extinct. There will be the All in one PCs, as now there are now more chassis available as well as thin mini itx motherboards, much so as you can build them now. I also think there will be something like the mac mini, intel released the NUC (http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/next-unit-computing-introduction.html) which are really cool, and zotac had the zbox out for a while now.
Of course there is the smaller boards too, like Pico atx and nano itx which are incredibly small and amazing. Theres the USB computers too, give it some time and they will become more and more powerful...
Technology is changing rapidly, I mean just cruising through a few archived threads in computer forums from like 2005-2008 people were amazed that a computer had 2gb of ram and a 500GB hard drive. Now, we can get up to like 5TB on a single drive!
Can't exactly say where technology will be in like 10 years, but, it interesting to see where it goes.
