As of Saturday, it will be illegal to unlock your cellphone on your own. It will still be legal for carriers to unlock your phone.

Basically... taking the phone you bought from Verizon but wanting to switch to T-Mobile, the phone is 'locked' to Verizon so it can only be used with Verizon network.
Unlocking it, basically allows any sim card to be installed from any carrier.
It is now illegal, in the US ;) ... If i'm not mistaken lol

I actually couldn't give a fuck. If I want my phone unlocked, I am going to do it. It's not really any of their business.

after today it is illegal to unlock your cell phone ! if its under contract with your phone company ( AT&T , sprint , version an so on ) now if your contract is over an payed off the company ( your phone carrier ) will unlock it for free or a small fee .this is due to people not paying there phone bill contracts in full and not screwing your phone company out of the balance of finishing your contract payments .you can pet cash at the phone stores an bet a unlocked phone and pick your carrier of your choice. this law is to protect the phone company's so they get there money . no big deal go to your computer an you can simply unlock your own phone in a 1/2 hour they can't stop it ! so don't worry about it ! If somehow they can catch you you will have to pay off your contract that you should have done any way haha.
jailbraking your phone is totaly diffrent it's called cydia any one can do it in minutes on the computer same to take the app off your phone . it has it's ups an downs you can loose a few of your factory settings camera photo storage . But there is so much more you can so with a jail broke phone . And new camera an everything good lock finding it . don't forget red snow you will need it !

You are not mistaken, the law has been passed. But, little thing many ppl do not know is that after 6 months in a contract, you are entitled to a free unlocking from your service provider. Something about being a clause on the anti-monopoly laws or something like that.
And yes, I said FREE. You own the cellphone, but have not finish paying it yet (your contract is how you pay). They will get their money if you decide to cancel the contract after the unlock.
This is only to slow down the number of phones being purchase, unlocked and then resold, thus competing with the provider's sales. An example was my sister, she used to "change" phones every two years, but all she does is get a free one, unlock it and sell it. She's happy with her galaxy s

Oh! yes me too heard that unlocking was made illegal after jan 26 so, without getting permission from the service provider you can't unlock your mobile. So to make unlocking as legal, you can visit https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/make-unlocking-cell-phones-legal/1g9KhZG7 and sign a petition .you need to wait upto 1Lakh petition get signed in and approved by US government. after it is make legal by USA government you can unlock mobile easily using online providers If you want to unlock any older mobile models then visit Unlocking4free.com (http://www.unlocking4free.com/) here they generate unlock code at free of cost.
