You'll be able to use the 3GS as long as you like, it will just not be able to use this update.

Why not? The phone will continue to work. Unless you are referring to the embarrassment of using such an old device.

I have a 2nd gen iPod Touch and the last version of iOS it could run came out years ago. I saw someone using a new iPod Touch a few weeks ago and didn't even recognize the interface at all.
