The Asus Taichi is a brilliant idea – a tablet on the lid of a laptop, it aims to make the most of Windows 8’s new touchscreen interface. Other devices force you to go through contortions, such as the Lenovo Yoga, which flips around so its screen can be used from almost all angles, but the Taichi is simply two products in one package.
That means you get a lovely tablet on top of a laptop that is made to the same standards as most of Asus’s other devices. Unfortunately, however, it’s not a touchscreen laptop, and therein the Taichi starts to fall down.
Windows 8, after all, is built for touch. So you get a good experience on tablets and now the laptops that have been used by generations feel oddly out of date. Once you’ve got used to touching the screen, going back feels uncomfortable indeed.
