My advice is to use Pandora or a similar website that suggests similar songs/bands to those that you already like. Without knowing what you already listen to I don't think I could successfully recommend songs.

This is a really good idea. Rock Alt and Metal isn't really much to go by, I mean there's soo many different kinds of music within those categories. Lately I've been listening to a lot of The Pretty Reckless, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, The Pixies, Ash, stuff like that.
