Does anyone else think handling (in a car) is really unimportant (and very overrated) in the real world?

Not at all. Makes a great difference when you're rounding a corner at 140 kmph in a blizzard.

You, my good sir, art though a dumbass. Handling makes all the difference, everyone has different driving styles.

What he is saying is that he doesn't think its unimportant. In other words, he thinks it is important.
And yes it is important. Lets say you come upon a sharp corner way too fast. I would rather be in an M3 than a Geo Tracker or something.

A Geo can barely go 45 mph without stuttering.

I know that, but that wasn't the point.

Handling is extremely important both in driving fast and driving every day. If I need to swerve to avoid something I'd much rather do it in my good handling volvo than in my terrible handling truck.

Handling is one of the mail points that you need to think about when you buy a car.
You don't want to drive on an icy road and slip off because you car can't take corners.

I don't think it's quite relevant to say that good handling is good only under extreme conditions. The average (majority) commuter doesn't drive through a blizzard at the limit everyday. I think it's like a good pair of shoes, finding a car with great handling that suits you is important because it connects you to the road.
As much as handling is important for getting out of tricky situations, I'm a fan of stiffness and strong road feedback. Others like it lighter, easier to manouvre and more complacent.
To sum it up. I'm super picky with cars. Driveability and handling/driving feel would probably be the first things I look at when looking at a car :)

Oh and if your also talking about turning radius it's not super important but nice in parking lots and easier to get around tight places
