The speakers built into mobile devices are almost uniformly terrible. Sure, you might see a tablet or smartphone described as having “good” sound, but that’s just in comparison to the mediocre competition. Objectively, all phone and tablet speakers are tinny and low volume. A new all rubber speaker being developed by Japan-based Tokai Rubber Industries could change that.

Until now, the speakers in small handheld devices have used drivers based on thin films and piezoelectrics. This has allowed speakers to fit in phones, but the bassy lows are sacrificed. The rubber speaker from Tokai Rubber reproduces a much wider range of sounds while still being slim enough to fit in a tablet or super-thin smartphone.
