The rapid expansion of social networking use risks alienating the elderly and fuelling social unrest in Britain, as those not online become viewed as "suspicious", an official report concluded today.
Commissioned by the government’s chief scientist, the report said Britons who refuse to participate in social networks such as Facebook and Twitter could find themselves marginalised as the majority increasingly express their identity online.
Within 10 years “maintaining an online presence could become normalised to the point where refusing to participate in online media could appear unusual or even suspicious", it warned.
Prof Sir John Beddington’s report concluded that over the next decade, a person’s traditional “identity” would undergo “increasingly dynamic or volatile” changes.
