I was wondering if anyone has expirence with self harm jokes. People in my family like to act as if everything is fine, when in reality we are all falling apart.
The most recent joke was tonight. We were in the car, and I was talking about how my poetry will most likely not make a lot of money. I was talking about how I'd need to get a big hit to make a decent amount of money. So She says, "You could make a special blade company for cutters."
I pretended to laugh along, but it really does hurt.:(
What's your expirence with self harm jokes?

Me and my friend both make cutting jokes to each other, but we both cut and have problems with it so we're able to see the lighter side. When it's someone else though it does feel a little uneasy sometimes but you just need to focus on not getting too upset about things. If someone does say something as a joke that you really take offense to, say something to them. It doesn't need to be a big arguement but just a small comment to tell them you don't like it.

It makes me feel queasy when people make cutting jokes. Last year one boy was talking to me and said "hey nikhila, this is going to be you in 5 years" and made cutting actions on his wrist. He didn't even know what I was going through. People make self harm and suicide jokes a lot, I notice it a lot more now. Like when people say stuff like "I love my pen oh I'm so depressed" I notice it instantly. It's just something people pick up from their peers and they are so ignorant as to how it might affect others it just carries on.

I have come across a lot of self harm jokes in my time, they really hurt. When I first heard them in high school it used to get me so upset, but now I just brush it off. The majority of people don't know I cut, so they aren't doing it to be spiteful. The most regular ones are normally 'im so depressed, waaah, im gonna cut myself' or along those lines, just general twats taking the piss out of something they don't understand.

I can't stand cutting jokes. They're almost as bad as rape jokes for me.
People joke about cutting and other mental issues a lot in my grade and a bit of me dies every time. It's not even that it's personally triggering for me, it's that they're making light of something that's completely not okay to mock because it fucking ruins lives.

i hate wehn people joke about self harm, they dont understand it or know how badly a person has to be feeling to even think about something like that... my whole family makes fun of self harm and people who do it, thw worst one and the one they do most oftern is either acting out cutting them self when something really little happen or when someone gets upsets.. its just plain out right rudeness

^ This, I'm in 10th grade and i hate when people joke about cutting. One of my so called friends says this a lot: "If you are going to cut your wrists, at least cut the two at the same time (with your mouth), 'cause if you cut one you cant cut the other!" I just hate it
Also, yesterday my mom said to me after dinner: "Take your favourite things to the kitchen the alcohol and the knifes"

Wow, your mother really shouldn't joke about those things. I hope you didn't find that to be too much of a trigger because it's not worth it. I take it she knows you have a problem with cutting?

Yes she knows, but in that day she went to far. When I was asleep she took my cellphone and saw some sms about cutting. I know it was stupid to not erase them but its my privacy...

I agree. I always keep my phone with me at all times so they can't see what's on it. I also delete my internet history because I don't think it's their buisness to know what websites I use

In a class full of guys I here them a lot, the general "thats wrist slashing music" "I hate this gonna go home and slash my wrists" "gonna go jump of bridge/building"... etc. Yes it hurts and depending on my mood I'll either laugh along or just pretend I didn't hear it.
I had a bandage on my wrist (to cover scars and some half healed cuts and because my wrist was generally hurting), which I had on when I went to college on a monday and my teacher (of all people) said to me (in front of the whole class), "Aww, the weekend wasn't that bad, was it?" I could've slapped him right in the face, I felt about 2 inches big. I know he was just joking, but I went home once that lesson had finished.
That was one of the few times that I nearly lost it because of Self Harm jokes.
People just don't care.

Oh my god. Your teacher said that? You should report that. What a heartless thing to say. I'm so sorry that happened to you.

It's over and done with. No point dragging it up now, besides the last time i reported the fact that some of the lads where saying extremely sexist jokes that made me uncomfortable, I went to my course tutor and told him and I got a "What do you want me to do about it". So... I have no faith in the people that are not only meant to be teaching us but also looking after us.
I should've walked out of that place last year.

They used to hurt pretty bad but now they don't. I don't find them funny at all, and the humor behind it is pretty stupid.
When people make cutting jokes around me without thinking, they always apologize to me quickly after they remember, or I just don't laugh, or they see scars on my arm/thighs. I feel pretty awkward when they apologize though because I honestly don't get offended or anything, I just don't care for that kind of humor.

well, i have never cut, but i have been extremely close to it. and because of who close i came to cutting, i am most of the time hurt very badly by them. most of the people who say cutting jokes at my school are people who i know have/still cut and only to others who have/still cut. anyone else who says one, is in some deep shit.

I agree with you. I got that with bullying when I tried to speak to an administrator.

I've notice that the majority of the time that the people who say that they care - actually couldn't give two shits about you. I learnt that the hard way.
And bullying - no one cares either (not in my experiences of it anyway). The bullies get a slap on the wrist and nothing more, a week later it's like they'd never been "told off".

I almost lost my life. I attempted suicide twice in two weeks because of them. They got in trouble once, and after that they were back at me. The administrator talking to them actually made it worse.
That's why I don't let anyone in my life anymore. Because everyone who said they cared left me.

I used to make a few jokes about it before i started but i still continue it now a little so people dont catch on. Yet i do understand how you feel because when we talked about suicide and cutting in health class i died a little on the inside hearing all the stereotypes like all we want is attention and someone to talk to. Half of that is true, i want to talk to someone yet i dont want anyone to find out about my cutting
Its a way for me to escape and deal with the pain and crap of everyday life, not a way to seek attention. It just makes me sick how many people ink that all cutters are "attention whores"

Exactly. The fact that I was asleep is what screws me...
I just remember another, there's a girl in my class when she's gives the wrong answer, she usually says: just give me a knife to kill my self. Of course my teacher laughs along with her.

I'm not sure. I think it depends on the person. My mom, for instance still jokes about it and she knows I cut.
People who don't know that I cut never really bring it up (adults) I hate how it's such a taboo thing to talk about when so many people are suffering in silence.
There was this girl last year in my science class. She kept going on about how gross and wrong she thought self harm was. I sat there with a loss for words. It's so ignorant.
People would never guess I would suffer like that because I hide it so well. A teacher found out and her exact words were, "I would have never guessed, you're perfect"

to be honest with some friends i make jokes about it, but that's cuz me and that person do it, and i am one to make fun of controversial topics. it's humor and it's how i cope.

Self harm jokes piss me off. So much. Period. There is never a time and place for them in my opinion. You never know who it could possibly hurt, and it could come back to haunt you. I find them extremely offensive, in the same sense that some people can't stand rascist jokes.

let me be clear in my post above this one.
i don't do them in public at all. that's never okay. i didn't want to make myself sound like a jerk by saying that i do use humor to cope. i use them on my own or with my friends or in the writing that i don't share.

Ugh. This makes me want to cry. On youtube, a video popped up. A guy was like "Well, I got an F on my quiz today so I'm going to cut myself. Well my parents are coming home soon so I better clean it up." He smeared the ketchup all over his face.
